| DESIGN NAME: Melt Collection PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tables INSPIRATION: We believe that nature is a huge source of inspiration therefore we tend to consult it whenever we can. While creating the Melt collection we were immensely inspired by the majestic Pamukkale Travertines in Turkey, an art piece fashioned by Mother Mature. Travertines looking soft and cloud-like but being actually quite hard in reality birthed the idea of carving stone into a melting shape while using a material that is no other than travertine stone itself. It was the perfect combination. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Blurring the lines between solidity and fluidity, the Melt collection leans primarily on travertine stone and wood to form a three-piece collection of tables while each piece plays with complementing and contrasting these materials in the name of achieving maximum aesthetic pleasure. As the name suggests, the idea behind the collection was to create a sensory illusion by shaping a hard material like stone to look like it is melting while taking inspiration from the travertines in Pamukkale. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In contrast, Melt looks like it's a melting liquid, but is actually weighty with its solid, carved natural stone top. It features a base made of two pieces of wood veneer legs. Available as console, coffee table and side table editions, these tables are designed to also function as an art piece. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each piece consists of a carved-stone top and a wooden base. The top part is made by carving a single block of travertine stone until the desired shape is achieved. Then placed on top of wooden legs covered with special veneers. (42 cm) Width:150 cm Depth:75 cm Side Table Height:57 cm Diameter:45 cm TAGS: wood, travertine, handmade, craftsmanship, console, table, melt, stone RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Melt collection is designed to compliment different natural materials in the most sophisticated way possible. In order to achieve that an experimental phase was due, in terms of form, structure and finishings. A lot of tests were made to see which veneers were doing justice to travertine stone chosen for the collection. CHALLENGE: Designing was all about expressing the various characteristics of travertine stone in a single form, merging mass, color, asymmetrical and organic shapes. We had to carve a 25 cm block of travertine stone into shape until it matched with what we had in our minds. On the bottom part we experimented with different types of wood veneers and varnishes.
