DESIGN NAME: Carlyle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool
INSPIRATION: George Nakashima has been an inspiration in Timothy's design development. Nakashima was able to harness the power of the tree by utilizing highly figured walnut, allowing the user to focus on the wood and connect with the materials while creating truly unique pieces. Timothy has utilized this aspect of design while building his own style, incorporating contrasting geometric elements to create an organic modernism.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Carlyle stool features a hand turned Claro Walnut seat, which is stabilized by a steel leg and brass stretcher. The unique combination of geometric shapes with organic textures present in the wood and the brushed brass creates a balance of man made and natural angles, inviting the user to sit while providing a stable functionality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This piece is intended to provide a minimalist seating option with a sturdy frame. By using geometric supports, the base of this stool can be a simple and unobtrusive design while providing the support needed for a bench.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2021 and finished in October 2021 in San Francisco, CA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The seat for this stool was hand turned from a solid piece of Claro Walnut. The piece also contains a powder coated steel leg and brass stretcher. The stretcher was laser cut from steel plate and plated in brass. The stretcher slots onto the square tubing metal leg and is welded in place to provide maximum stability.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 330 mm x 330 mm x 450 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This piece aimed to create a minimalist stool with geometric and natural components. By combining circles, squares, and triangles and wood with metal and brass, the range of shapes and materials complement each other in an aesthetic and functional seat.
CHALLENGE: One of the challenges with this piece is getting the stretcher to fit on the metal leg. It slots onto the leg and provides stability because of very precise metal cutting and engineering.
