DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Sema Ceremony

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Art

INSPIRATION:
The word Sema means listening. It's a ceremonial dance in which the dancer focuses on their inner spiritual world until they communicate with the universe. This performance often includes singing, playing instruments, dancing, recitation of poetry and prayers and other rituals. In this position, the dancer feels that the whole world is one and humans, animals, plants, etc. are all from the same origin. I was inspired by this concept to depict an ideal world in which all creatures are equal. I used symbolism to stand for freedom of women's clothing, equal rights for men and women, respected homosexual rights and animal rights. This Utopia consists of the most beautiful conceps like love, peace, equality and freedom.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In Persian culture, dome is a symbol of world and wind is messenger of good news. The wind dances in the main musician's hair freely as a symbol of women's right to freedom of clothing. Her hair is full of flowers and leaves. Seven horses are born from her hair running freely. Behind her, people are dancing and drinking wine. The love of two women, two men, and some animals and plants are depicted. Number of women, men and animals are 21, symbolizing September 21, the international day of peace.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ritual dances have been performed by Iranians since ancient times. After Islam developed in Iran, dancing was banned and Iranians invented a special type of religious ceremonial dance called Sema. The great poet Rumi has shown this dance in his poems in Persian. And in this work, one of his poems is also engraved on the Daf. I also examined the miniature art history to sketch the characters.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge was to design 63 different male, female and animal characters. For this matter, I examined all Persian miniatures from the beginning until now. The next challenge was the social hardship of creating artworks with such a theme and concept in Iran. Also, the original Iranian woodcarving is very difficult, detailed and time consuming, and I researched and worked for more than 3,000 hours in two years to finish this design. The main musician character is actually my spouse and I successfully carved her face on wood which was challenging.
