| DESIGN NAME: Grand Duc PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table INSPIRATION: The Grand Duc model finds its inspiration in the Belgian territory, many stone quarries are located in Belgium, the Warche quarry exploits a unique segment of a schistose sandstone called Moellons. The use of steel is not insignificant, it recalls the Golden Age of the Belgian steel industry. A Great Horned Owl is enthroned in the quarry and plays an essential role in the biodiversity of the place. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Grand Duc is a table composed of a thin slice of stone, the stone called moellons is unique in the world, the stone is extracted from the quarry of Warche in Belgium. The tablet is worked by hand to obtain special patterns and colors. This stone is placed on inclined feet in welded steel. Its ergonomics allows to sit at 8 around in a pleasant position. The variety of textures gives a unique aesthetic aspect to each model. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The stone is extracted in the quarries of the Warche in Belgium. It is then cut to the desired size. The different machinings give the aspect and the motives to the stone. The finishing touches are made by hand by craftsmen. The legs are made of steel available in different colors. All parts are assembled in the Malstone workshops. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2021 in Malmedy and finished in January 2022 in Malmedy. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A huge block of stone is extracted from the quarry, it is divided into slices by hand, then the slices are refined with a wire machine. The resulting slice is CNC machined. The slab is then engraved with a water jet and the various finishes such as chamfering and polishing are done by hand. The steel legs are made of laser cut, folded and welded together.The steel structure is then placed in baths to be metallized and painted according to the consumer's choice. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1000 mm x 2000 mm x 790 mm x 160 Kg TAGS: table, design, garden, outdoor, indoor, marble, sandstone, metal RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The starting point was the following question: "How to improve the value of unmined shale sandstone from the Warche quarries? To obtain the final design of the Grand Duc table, the research turned around brainstorming and design thinking sessions. All team members participated in the research process to get a wide range of ideas. Several design ideas were prototyped to obtain the final result. CHALLENGE: Several points proved to be real challenges, to obtain a thin slice of stone in such large dimensions, It requires knowledge and great precision, each blow of the hammer is important, the slightest error can weaken the stone. Logistics and storage required a lot of attention during the project. , the density of the stone and the technical restrictions linked to it, required a considerable investment.
