DESIGN NAME:
Take a Pill

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Floor Lamp

INSPIRATION:
In a world where we are all on some form of pharmaceuticals, take a pill collection is an homage to our current society and the role pharmaceutical companies play. Get a daily dose of our favourite prescription floor lamp because ambience is just what the doctor ordered. This is prescription for the soul. Available in four different colour combinations these accents will add a welcoming mood and vibe to any space without sacrificing your playful style. Hand crafted and blown in Murano, Venice by Wonderglass. In addition to referencing the societal influences, this floor lamp is also a celebration of artisan craftsmanship that is slowly dying in our society. The brass rings around the pill were inspired from a bracelet.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Hand blown in traditional Venetian glassblowing technique in Murano, this collection is to celebrate old world techniques with new world thinking. The form is simple, a giant pill blown in two halves with different colour variations joined by an LED system which allows the glass to emit a warm glow without seeing too much mechanism. The idea is to fuse new technology in lighting system and combine it with this very old world technique of blowing glass to create an art installation but also functional.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It is a floor lamp with a switch on the cable. The giant pill can be rotated to adjust the angle to where you want to angle to point. The bulb is LED.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The research and development of the pill started in March 2019 in Canada however, due to Coronavirus the project got delayed until May 2021. We then worked with Wonderglass on the project in Oct 2021. Currently looking into the production of this prototype in Murano, Venice. We are planning to exhibit this in the Salone Del Mobile in June 2022

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We worked with Wonderglass to produce this floor lamp. The specific technical detail for the lighting part is developed by Wonderglass which consists of an led bracelet or ring around the centre of the glass pill and is secured by interlocking rings to lock the glass together. The stand (giant tweezer) is made in stainless steel in polished brass finish with engraving that says - 'I used to care but I take a pill for that now.' The base is made of marble which houses the tweezer stand, lighting components and cable with a groove at the bottom to allow the cable to come through. Handblown by artisans in Murano, Venice. Materials: Glass, stainless steel and marble.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We started the project by researching technical details of the lighting components and how to operate the pill. For example, we started with one blown glass for the pill however we quickly realized we need to make the pill in two halves so the bulb can be changed. At this stage in the development, we started off with dual bulbs on a vertical where the middle section will house all the electrical components, however, we see that this design is not clean or minimal to give the glowing effect of a pill. We then worked with Wonderglass to develop something which gives a cleaner look and decided to use led ring at the joint section of the two halves to make it aesthetically more pleasing. The result is a much cleaner look and doesn't interfere with the overlook of the floor lamp.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest challenge for this design is coming up with a lighting component that is very clean and minimal without exposing the parts since it is made of glass the challenge is hiding all of that. In the end we came up with an LED ring which is very clean and gives off very even distribution of light.
