DESIGN NAME: Gentleman
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Space
INSPIRATION: This space is a new residence purchased by a Chinese returnee, who expects the interior to inherit the habitual living style abroad and give the family a suitable spatial layout to enjoy their daily lives. Hence, the overall is decorated in a modern and simple style using gray and white colors, stone veneer, and lightings to give a quiet and elegant feeling.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The whole space is decorated in a modern and simple style. The public area is constructed using the open-end method; the living room and the dining area are divided by colors and decorations. The bar counter and the dining table of the dining room are combined in a T-shape to provide more space for owners to bake and interact during meals and cooking. As for the private area, linear lights are set up on the television wall at the end of the bed to modify the narrow corridor while giving a finishing touch.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designer set up cabinets to increase consistency to eliminate the abruptness and asymmetry brought by the initial beams. Meanwhile, the simple-themed interior is decorated with rich materials in ecological tones, such as woods and stones, to create a calm and stable atmosphere for the users. In addition, the clients hobby for baking is also considered; hence, a kitchen island is set up within the open-end space. The island is connected with the dining table, allowing users to practice culinary skills while interacting with family members and friends.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2020 and finished in August 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This space is a newly-constructed residence; the overall configuration was the designer priority during the planning stage. Within the smooth traffic flow, linear elements are added to outline the hallway and eliminate the common impression of dullness, while linear lightings are embedded to guide directions during nighttime. At the same time, the considerate traffic flow and area planning have both simulated the habits of the owners when living overseas; an open-end kitchen island is specially set up between the dining tables have met their interest in cooking while giving space to interact and strengthen their bond.
CHALLENGE: While maintaining consistency and balance for the overall, the designer has faced the problems caused by original beams when planning the open-end public area. Given this, numerous system cabinets are set up to decorate the erupting beams while giving functionality to the site. Meanwhile, the display and storage cabinets' integration has created a balanced visual effect while maximizing space efficiency.
