DESIGN NAME: Flowing Lights
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: The designer applied grey colors that stable people bodies and minds as the critical tone of the spatial, and selected vintage-like furniture in the same tone, dark-grey system appliances, and kitchen counters. At the same time, each corner of the public and private area is set up with expansive windows to draw nature lighting, allowing users to bath in sunlight; this open-end residence has created an intimate area that breaks free limitations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The public area is equipped with an open-end living room and kitchen; different materials in the same tone are mixed and matched. Meanwhile, the design of each area has considered its functionality of durability and convenience, allowing all areas to be echoed with the overall grey tone. The transparent public area has maintained its lighting advantage while adding windows to the cooking area; six seats are placed around the island of the wrap-around kitchen. The private area continues the purity of the public area by expanding wooden elements.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The original ceiling height is kept from the initial spatial arrangement of the preowned house; therefore, the designer arranged the traffic flow along the beam-columns to create fluency. Unlike ordinary residences, the owner of this project values cooking functions and hoped to create a tight bond with family members through the kitchen area. Hence, the designer specially applied the open-end method to the public area to maintain spatial transparency and create opportunities for gatherings and interactions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2020 and finished in November 2020 in Zhongshan District, Taipei City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Hardware grating, cement paints, SPC, steel-imitated griddle plates, wooden partitions.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project is a refurbished 37.8-ping preowned house. The designer has divided the space into three rooms, two living rooms, and two bathrooms according to the initial beam-columns and has defined a clear, complete public and private area. The three bedrooms on the same side of the residence are set up with wooden partitions, trap doors, and arc-shaped designs that echo the overall grey tone and inject a sense of steadiness and richness.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The initial spatial arrangement was the critical point of adjustment, and the re-planning of the spatial has eliminated the towering and narrow feeling brought by the beam-columns. Four areas are planned along with the columns, and the public and private areas are divided clearly and equally. An open-end method is applied to connect the living room, the kitchen, and the dining room, allowing users to enjoy a smooth and balanced traffic flow. Grey color tones, arc-shaped elements, gratings, and trap doors are appropriately set up to enhance an expansive and enlarged visual feeling.
CHALLENGE: The designer has taken the lighting advantages and the client demands within the initial space limitations. The public and private areas are arranged at the two ends of the space, while the clear traffic flow has allowed the residence to be smoother and more convenient. The unorderly placed hardware-made gratings have secretly defined the scope of the entryway. In contrast, the open-end methods of the overall spatial have transformed the limited space by maximizing the flexibility of visual and application in many ways.
