Uptown Underground

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Installation

INSPIRATION:
The experience of riding the subway is marked by detachment: in the moments between stations, all urban context is stripped away and replaced with darkness. Uptown Underground takes inspiration from the glass-bottom boat, where access is granted to the reeds, the fish, and the dark depths normally inaccessible. This offered a dynamic perspective, by imagining seeing through the ceiling of the train to the street above.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
How might it be possible to restore a connection to a subway train's urban context and create an awareness of movement through the city? Uptown Underground projects a geographically accurate view of the cityscape above a moving subway car onto its ceiling as it moves under New York City. The intervention was installed without permission on a series of wagons from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to 96th Street stations, a roughy 9.5 kilometer and 25-minute loop along the East Side of Manhattan.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Once the projector-clamp-projector units are clamped to the subway poles and turned on, and the iPhone connected to the installation's WiFi network and app opened, the installation runs itself. The images of the city above the train move in concert with the movements of the train in order to remain in sync. Those on the train tended to put down their cell phones and, with excitement and curiosity, look up.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
A series of installations took place across late 2019 and early 2020, before the Coronavirus pandemic.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Uptown Underground is implemented with four Raspberry Pi's, each connected to a projector and a battery power source. On startup, each computer joins a peer-to-peer WiFi network, or creates one if it doesn't already exist. With this network they register their positions on the train, determining video playback timing offsets. Finally, an iPhone transmits geolocation and acceleration data, determining playback timecodes and speed, thus accurately resting in synchronization with the world above.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Each projector/computer/battery setup was approximately 16cm x 10cm x 10cm. Two were attached to each subway pole via articulating arms and a clamp, rendering each two-projector unit around 38cm x 14cm x 10cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Uptown Underground engaged in design research to create a technology-positive interaction with the sole intention of augmenting the urban experience. It did this by directly intervening in the daily lives of subway users through projections and new technologies. Data gathered was wholly subjective, relying on the visible reactions of subway riders to the intervention. Many riders expressed joy or excitement at the installation, even curiosity and wonder.

CHALLENGE:
The most difficult aspect of this project proved social more than technical: operating within a city so defined and scarred by terrorism made it difficult to introduce technology in the subway without raising suspicion. By being incredibly explicit about the project and its intentions, it was possible to bring people into the experience with excitement.

NAME:
Ian Callender

PROFILE:
Ian is a New York City-based artist and designer exploring the intersection of the built environment and digital technologies. As he grew up in New York City, Central Park was his backyard and the city his playground. He developed loves for architecture and urbanism early, as well as a critical engagement with the issues that underly them. Simultaneously, through computer science, he became fascinated by the active and responsive manipulation of virtual space. Through physical computing he learned to merge the two: the playground, so to speak, became of his own derivation. Its logic was easy to adjust and explore, and working in the physical domain, to him, meant working in grounded and veritably human experience.
