DESIGN NAME: Chalim
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tea Sets
INSPIRATION: I thought that one of the things we lost after COVID was "Cha-lim" culture. It is a traditional Korean dining culture that is formalized and includes serving each other and one's own. This culture is a kind of respect of everyday life. I'm focused on tea dining and tried to provide a modern solution from traditional elements. I experimented with applying Korean crafts to production and discovered the possibility of using Korean natural lacquering as tableware when applied to 3d printing.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Chalim" is a 3d printed tea set with Korean natural lacquer 'Ottchil' applied. It looks like traditional Korean teaware, but if you look closely, it reveals its own beauty. Interestingly, 3D printing is similar to the ceramic production process, and it is easy to manufacture and finished with natural lacquering, making it sustainable for a long time. This approach raises questions about tradition and modernity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is designed to stack teapots, plates, and teacups, so users can store them easily and enjoy a unified look when using them together. The plate lid can be used as a teacup coaster so that users can enjoy the tea comfortably without other equipment for tea dining.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2021 and finished in June 2021 in Seoul.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Chalim is made by bio-filaments and Ott(Toxicodendron vernicifluum), painted with natural lacquer 'Ottchil' after 3d printing without assembly. It is hand lacquered and goes through several drying and repainting processes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: Teapot 140 x 190 x 73 mm / Teacup 65 x 65 x 54 mm / Tea plate 130 x 130 x 30 mm
Materials: Ott(natural lacquer), bio-filaments.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I refine user scenarios and structures based on research on general Korean teaware and "Cha-lim" culture. I experimented with applying the Korean craft technique on a 3d printed surface, adjusting the Ottchil density, and testing the texture.
CHALLENGE: The process of refining culture to be applied to modern life while maintaining the traditional mood was challenging. Before designing the form, I had to prioritize experimenting with the materials and test the craftsmanship, and due to the COVID, I had to find material around me. On the other hand, I discovered the positive aspects of the "Cha-lim" culture in the lockdown situation. I was able to find the user scenario by doing a tea ceremony in daily life. At the end of the experiment, I discovered the potential of tableware for dining, including the tea series, with a traditional and modern material finish.
