DESIGN NAME: Nan Ping Park
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sports Center
INSPIRATION: The Nan Ping Park Sports Center is a relaxing but vital parkland designed by architect J.A.Chen. The design drew inspiration from its surrounding environment - waterfront, natural breeze, and sunlight – and incorporated the qualities in architecture. Besides retaining the original riverside landscape, the architect was also committed to creating some innovative sensory experiences. Design features like the fluid exterior wall, natural ventilation, and colored glazing all serve this purpose.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The building is a green architecture that has achieved an EEWH mark. The design incorporated sustainable strategies such as natural ventilation, rainwater and pool water recycling, and rooftop solar panels to vastly reduce the long-term energy costs of operation.
The main programs are a swimming pool, a fitness center, a rhythmic classroom, and a spinning bike classroom. These are oriented to offer views into the open park space and the surrounding riverbank.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main building has a low-leveled massing in a curvilinear form. Its exterior is comprised of white walls and colored glass curtain walls. The former sets a simplistic and calming tone for the architecture, and the latter helps enhance its spatial vitality and visibility, thus interacts with the outdoor landscape. The contrasting material properties will direct visitor’s attention to the play of natural lighting and colors, hence amplify the architecture's sensational and experiential quality.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 and finished in December 2017 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 1. The external curtain wall system is produced by installing colored films to glazing.
2. The building achieves passive cooling by utilizing the electric smoke exhaust window to enhance natural ventilation and dissipate heat.
3. Natural daylight enters the building via the North skylight opening, allowing diffused light in.
4. The roof is a multi-layered heat-insulating and sound-absorbing steel plate equipped with solar panels oriented towards the South to gain maximum sunlight.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site area: 7,296 m2
Total Floor area: 1,093.94 m2
Total Building height 13.1 m

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The building was evaluated using the EEWH system with the target of optimizing its energy efficiency. By applying the following suggested strategies, the building managed to decrease its energy consumption by 20%-30%
1.Increase the amount of plantation
2.Use water-permeable pavement for landscape
3.Improve the insulation of external walls and roof
4.Use LED energy-saving lamps and partition control switches
5.Use water-saving sanitary appliances
6.Recycle and reuse rainwater and swimming pool Overflow
7.Use Efficient air-conditioning systems and low-formaldehyde interior materials
CHALLENGE: One of the main challenges of a public construction project is to keep the cost of construction under the government’s legislation. The allowed average cost per square meter is only 326 euros, meaning that the budget can only be spent on critical features that serve long-term energy-saving and building functioning. These include curved stained-glass curtain walls, heated swimming pool filtration and sterilization systems, natural ventilation windows, and multi-layer metal roof panels.
