| DESIGN NAME: Genesis And Growth PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vessel INSPIRATION: According to an ancient myth dating back to 600 BC, the great creator Phan Ku grew from a single seed and then created the world with a chisel, carving rivers, plants and mountains on the surface of the earth. Design of this vessel is inspired by genesis of the universe from nothing and growing to the highest level of existence, which is beauty and art. This motif is engraved on a lotus-shaped wood, which in Persian and Achaemenid culture is a symbol of the world, spiritual growth and perfection. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is shaped as a lotus with 12 petals, symbolizing months of the year in Persian mythology. Inverted tulip is displayed for the first time in this artwork and needs to be protected as it's in serious danger of extinction due to excessive harvest. pomegranate blossom inspired by inscriptions in Persepolis. Bimennat, a special flower that survives without water for a long time and it is a symbol of pride and hope. Others are Sassanid diadems. The base is inspired by Persepolis columns. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This vessel can be used as a decorative object and a serving dish if preferred. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The whole project, designing and wood carving Genesis started and finished in Shiraz, Iran, in 2021. It has not been exhibited so far. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To make this, I designed and sketched all the plants and flowers and shapes and carved them with a small knife. The material is pear wood. And the method is Iranian traditional woodcarving. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The vessel is 20 cm in height and 32 cm in diameter, and it weighs 200 grams. TAGS: Woodcarving, Pear Wood, Save Natural Resources, Save Forests, Save Green Lives, Save Trees, Save Inverted Tulips, Stop Deforestation, Genesis, Wood Vessel RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Origin of the universe has always been interesting to me, and I have read a lot about theories of genesis, specifically the Big Bang theory. In the center of this vessel, the beginning of existence and the emergence of the sun, time, life and plants are displayed. To design the flowers, I studied their mythological and historical background and in case of overturned tulips, in addition to the mythical background, I realized that they are in serious danger of extinction, so I decided to draw attention by including them in this artwork. In the end, I connected the two and brought them to life. CHALLENGE: The fundamental challenge was to find pear wood in these dimensions and it was very expensive. The same design on the twelve petals and the base was difficult due to curves and angles of the vessel. I made a small knife to carve the parts that were out of access. NAME: Alireza Khatapoosh PROFILE: Alireza Khatapoosh is a lifelong artist, designer and instructor. His artworks are mostly woodcarving and marquetry, as well as model making and wood sculpting. His designs are inspired by ancient Persian culture and literature. He combines art with mythology aspects and symbolism. He teaches this method of wood art in Khatapoosh art academy and has been teaching woodcarving and design in small villages of Iran for several years. |
