PRIMARY FUNCTION: Neck Support Pillow
INSPIRATION: As for its appearance, we got inspiration from bread arrayed in the bread cupboard. The higher area at two sides, the upper area and the central area respectively mimic the styling of French toast, French loaves, and sweet buns. Based on ergonomics, we refined the design in hope of rendering sound sleep for users.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Five-area Neck Pillow is specially designed for protecting the cervical spine. Referring to ergonomics, the entire pillow is divided into five areas to keep suitable bending of the cervical spine, which facilitates the flow of blood and ensures the quality of sleep.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Aiming to various users, the neck pillow is devised with thickness of three levels: low, medium and high. The thickest area is targeted at people who are used to sleeping on one side, such as pregnant women, which can effectively supports the cervical spine and shoulders to avoid a sore shoulder after long-time one-side lying. Besides, the dual-layer design of the central concave area can separately fit the curve of head and shoulders, catering to the demands of back sleepers.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2020 in Hangzhou, China and finished in April 2021.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There exists the phenomenon in modern society that average sleeping hours of people are decreasing year by year due to rapider pace and heavier burden of life. Therefore, how to guarantee quality sleep in limited sleeping hours holds the key to our design. The research indicates that appropriate height of pillow is able to effectively increase the proportion of deep sleep during sleep period and thus relieve the mental fatigue.
CHALLENGE: The most difficulty lies in selection of the filling in the fabric at earlier stage. The unsuitable proportion of filling may lead to terrible use experience or inadequate head supporting. At the later research and development period, fifty users who have severe problems of sleeping were invited to take our test. Finally, we optimized several details including the height and the filling proportion and successfully increased sleeping time by two hours after multiple tests.
