DESIGN NAME: Alien
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Chair
INSPIRATION: With the background of an existing project, a hotel lobby with heavy structural elements, this three-legged chair came to life after a realisation of the general needs of simplicity in a dining chair while maintaining its uniqueness either bundled up or scattered. As a result, the rear legs and back of the chair merged into a skeleton-like system to pleasantly nestle one ergonomics, generating a desirable level of comfort. The final form named itself Alien, expressing our excitement and curiosity stemming from our human instinct to discover the mystery of outer space or simply the ever-existing desire to connect to the unknown.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The formation of the 'Alien' back bone: unifying the traditional rear legs and back rest, became the main highlight of this dining chair. The design excels with its simple yet sophisticated back view, particularly in multi-seater dining sets. The front legs and seat are similarly kept simple, employing the same language of organic form and intricate details. The design serves as a resting and communication point while exuding architectural monumentality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As a dining chair, this object invites people to sit and interacts comfortably. As it is without armrest, the chair can also be in sets, fitting for any compact living situation. Our attention to the details and finishing also ensure a long-lasting object.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2020 and finished in March 2021 in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The final design is the result of a clear communication between the designers and the craftsmen. With the belief that a hands-on approach is necessary in the making of any product, the original concept and design was developed on 1:1 prototypes, then was further adjusted and improved solely on the physical model to ensure a level of comfort based on accurate user experiences. Surfaces, burrs and details are all handmade, expressing our appreciation for craftsmanship. When the production of each elements is completed, the construction of the chair is rather tectonic.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design is a dining chair that was researched and modelled specifically to fit the Asian physics, resulted in it being slightly smaller and at an unnoticeably lower height compared to Western designs. We also focus on the chair’s ergonomics and user experiences. The design method was hands-on approach with back-and-forth between digital modelling and physical modification of a 1:1 prototype. Resulted in the final design being a structurally sound chair that provides a satisfying sitting experience yet exhibits many sophisticated design details.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part within the production of this specific design is the structural aspect of the three-legged chair, specifically in determining its centre of gravity to avoid overturning and structural connection between the 'ALIEN' back bone and the rest of the elements. As a product of craftsmanship, another point of difficulty is the sculptural quality of the back that would be comfortable to every user despite the diversity in human ergonomics.
