| DESIGN NAME: Obsession PRIMARY FUNCTION: XR New Performing Art INSPIRATION: During Japanese rule (WWII), Sayion's (17yr old TW Austronesian girl) death was manipulated and glorified with songs, paintings and movies to promote patriotism. Decades later, Keh-Hsiao Lin (Taishin Holdings GM), obsessed with her mystery, investigated and published a book. He later died at the forbidden mountain trail near her accident. The book is the seed and dna that inspired me. Like a black whole, I was drawn to compose music and to create new art for my muse, Sayion. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: XR Obsession (Extended Reality) integrates a live element with augmented, virtual, and mixed realities to mesmerize the audience. It is a performing, conceptual, kinetic, digital, video, abstract, and performance art. It vividly traverses Taiwan history, art, and natural beauty through time and space. Dynamic volumetric capture fuses with 3D animation. A live performance blends with AR, VR realms and is projected on a large Led wall for all to enjoy a new exciting immersive xr experience. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The beauty of performing art is its dynamic live nature, making each performance unique. In XR Obsession, the viewers are also the participants, adding a new fun and surprise factor. As in Alice in the wonderland, the journey in curiosity, imagination, and adventure is what we hope to deliver. On top of that, we provided a musical alternate reality experience without the need for AR, VR headsets. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: XR Obsession was selected and sponsored by the Taiwan Ministry of culture. We pushed the envelope, debuting an exciting and touching new cross-art performance at the opening ceremony of IMPRESSION OF TAIWAN at the 26th Annual International Art Expo, Art Taipei, with venue at the World Trade Center in Taipei Taiwan, on Oct. 17 2019. The documented film was recorded at the performance, edited and revised on 2021. The duration of the film is about 5.5 minutes. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The beautiful ancient landscape paintings of Houei-Kuen Chen were brought to life with special animation effects to create a moving artwork. 4D Views volumetric video capture, using thirty-two 360 degrees cameras, recorded the pianist and dancer's virtual realm movements. Modern expressive body language incorporate strong intertwined emotions, time traveling between realities. Real time capture of the live performance using a 3D depth sensor camera enabled a true XR experience. XR is AR, VR, MR. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Live performance on a Yamaha Piano. Animation film projected on a wall sized led screen with active speakers. XRO combines the elements of performing (live piano performance), conceptual (illusional obsession), kinetic (animated paintings, virtual movement), digital (animation, multimedia, and volumetric capture), abstract (new music composition), and XR live performance (combines AR, VR, and MR ) art. The outcome of the full recording of the live piano, XR performance is an action video art. CHALLENGE: Taiwan is originally known as Formosa (beautiful island). The vistas, captured through the painter's eye, are resurrected. Sayion reflects the hardship that the country endured. The goal is to promote Taiwan through fun, educational and meaningful interactive art. Pairing and synching music to an animated film, incorporating AR, VR realms and to debut it in a live performance was a fulfilling challenge. Creating art is like giving birth. But when it bears fruit, you leave a legacy. NAME: Chia-Hui Lu / Egret Cultural and Educational Foundation PROFILE: The Egret Foundation is devoted to promoting & branding Taiwan.
