DESIGN NAME: Zhongli Story House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public space interior design
INSPIRATION: The foundations of the original buildings are retained, whereas the exteriors are renovated using the same materials. Meanwhile, building stone, stone tiles and marble planters add to the antiquity of the historical site. The structures of the old Japanese buildings are also maintained, raised 2.5 feet above ground, which is conducive to ventilation, heat dissipation, and prevention of humidity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Constructed in 1941, with a history of around 80 years, the Japanese-style dormitory of the former Zhongli Police Station
is now transformed into Zhongli City Story House.
Through the renovation project, the buildings are revamped, emerging as a historical site that will be sustained for generations to come. In this way, the community is revitalized and endowed with modernity while retaining its historical significance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To meet the needs for accessibility, a wooden wheelchair ramp is constructed at the back entrance of the restaurant, as its front entrance is not wide enough for the purpose. Hence this old historical site embodies a new humanistic concern. A new elevated wooden platform 45 centimeters in height works perfectly with the outdoor section and can serve as a stage for performance, making the site more versatile in its use.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mellow hardwood is used in the ceiling and the floor of the restaurant, thus shaping a delicate Japanese style. Non-glaring pilot lamps are used to enhance the illumination of the space. With a view to protecting the historical buildings, gas fire is not allowed, and hence the menu features Japanese-style hotpots cooked on induction stove, which also symbolizes Taiwanese people sitting around a stove at family reunion. In addition, as Zhongli has a large Hakka community, such Hakka motifs as tung-tree blossoms and dyed fabrics are incorporated into the upholstery and cushions. Short-lived though tung-tree blossoms are, they signify the beauty of seizing the present and thus the Hakka spirit of toughness and steadfastness when faced with limitations of life. Also, during the Japanese rule, the Japanese planted large numbers of tung trees for their economic value. The patterns of tung-tree blossoms indoors echo the sakura blossoms—which symbolize Japan—planted outside, the way Taiwanese and Japanese cultures have been interconnected and intertwined.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through renovation and reuse, not only is the project maintained, but its historical and cultural landscape is also retained. Its commercial space opens up job opportunities in cultural tours and restaurant business, so that instead of outsourcing its operation, the site can be self-sufficient. Local cultural development and art cultivation can also be promoted. New facets are added to the preserved old structures, while functions like leisure, performance and dining make here a tourist attraction and reshape the cultural image of the community.
