DESIGN NAME: Feeling at Ease
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential interior design
INSPIRATION: The entire space features grayish blue, a solid yet grand color that serves to highlight the texture of the space and look soothing. The veins on the TV wall are accentuated with special paint, while custom-made grille makes for storage space whose neat lines are balanced with wood and iron parts, accenting variation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project's perfect location has attracted a large number of businesses and shops. Since the opening of a huge outlet, the location has become a best choice for potential homeowners. Feeling at Ease is now a living space for a homeowner couple and their young kid. Its designing team believes that only with flowing fresh air can good Feng-shui be brought into the residence. Through ingenuity, the layout of the space can not only maximize functionality, but be beneficial to health.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To make the residence last longer, special care has been given to its adaptability. For example, the height difference indoors and outdoors is lowered, and the hallway is of a suitable width. In this way, possible future needs are taken into account, so that the space can adapt to changes in the needs of the dwellers as they grow older. Apart from this, all the wood used indoors has been processed to be methanol-free, thereby making the building material bug-resistant and low-toxic. In so doing, the construction can be most cost-effective.

To showcase the homeowner couple’s love of traveling as well as the host’s need of traveling between Shanghai, the U.S. and Taiwan, the wall behind the sofa has a world map and clocks of three cities in similar tones to that of the entire room,. With the clocks, the three different time zones are demonstrated, to facilitate business contacts and exchanges.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In sum, the homeowners’ needs and the space are taken into careful consideration in the design of the residence. The line between religious belief and good appearance is blurred, and a negative-pressure cycle in which air can flow freely is created, shaping a residence that can breathe. Human-based and eco-friendly, the residence is specifically designed so that substances harmful to health are minimized. Feeling at Ease, being flexible, durable and thoughtful, makes for a healthy dwelling where its users can feel at ease and stay healthy for years to come.
CHALLENGE: The designing team reorganizes the room-dividing walls that affect the amount of natural light. Also, concealed in the ceiling above the altar table is a regular mute ventilation fan, so as to remove incense smoke of worshipping from the room. In this way, a natural cycle of negative pressure is formed, and natural light and fresh air can be let into the living space. This new-form altar table is complemented by a wall of special coating, which, paired with the golden characters of Heart Sutra (a Buddhist sutra) inscribed on it, makes it possible to incorporate traditional religious belief into the space elegantly and harmoniously.
