DESIGN NAME: Morandi Serenity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential interior design
INSPIRATION: The homeowner, a bridal makeup artist and hairstylist who has a keen eye for colors and has great insights, bought a distinctive grayish blue sofa before renovating the space. As such, the spatial design begins with the sofa, expanding and extending to end in a keynote white incorporated into Morandi blue and green. The main style of the space is thus shaped in a simple and light-retro form.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in downtown Kaohsiung, this housing unit of 66 square meters has been transformed, through the designer’s adjustment of its original spatial plan, from a dwelling intended for a small family to a multipurpose space that accommodates both work and living, so as to be most cost-effective on a limited budget.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At the entrance is a multifunctional area that combines daily living and work, with its open-plan space meeting the needs of a living room, a studio and a dining room. In keeping with the profession of a makeup artist, this light-retro style using such details as molding and golden rail also highlights individualized neatness and efficiency while creating a feel of romantic luxury. At the center of this versatile space is the grayish blue sofa, which is opposite the TV wall of Volakas white marble, making for an exquisiteness that becomes a visual highlight in the entire space.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Apart from her full-time job, the homeowner also engages in teaching makeup art and hairstyling. Accordingly, in addition to the space for daily life, cooking and dining, there has to be extra space for furniture and items of soft outfit design for teaching and making up. Therefore, the original three-room layout is adapted into a two-room one, with the extra space converted into a studio. At the entrance is a multifunctional area that combines daily living and work, with its open-plan space meeting the needs of a living room, a studio and a dining room. In keeping with the profession of a makeup artist, this light-retro style using such details as molding and golden rail also highlights individualized neatness and efficiency while creating a feel of romantic luxury.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Sitting side by side right behind the sofa are three sets of desks and chairs. The foldable desktops have built-in LED light fixtures which, when opened, are ideal for applying makeup, and can be regular desktops when closed. This multifunctional apartment, despite its narrowness, is designed with every aspect in mind and serves to meet various needs.
CHALLENGE: Engineered wood flooring stretches from the public area to the bedroom, enhancing the completeness and integrity of the space. Behind the living room is the teaching studio, which features a large gray mirror and suspended iron shelves. Not only does the reflection of the mirror visually expand the small studio, but the iron shelves can also be used to display bridal bouquets and decorations, so that the flora art and decorations can shape a light, floating feel for the wall. The multipurpose space has custom-made blue and green cabinets, whose spray-painted solid wood edging and metal handles go well with simulated-stone surface, cleverly creating a highly refined spatial effect within a limited budget.
