DESIGN NAME: Cybermoda
PRIMARY FUNCTION: App
INSPIRATION: Fashion is a half art and design discipline. The art feature requires the designer to deliver abstract fashion concept which represents the current context. It means fashion needs to be explained. How to explain it to the public?
My research was also inspired by reflections on the fashion industry and interaction design in the context of the epidemic. How the fashion industry can adapt to the pandemic situation and evolve to achieve a better user experience?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cybermoda is an augmented reality fashion show app. It is not only a fancy AR app but also an information-sharing platform for fashion lovers and experts. It allows experts to freely share their key opinions. Users can browse the comments of the experts directly. Each comment corresponds to a different persona. Users can change their role by changing their position or angle physically to see more comments from the eyes of different characters. All models and clothes are presented through an AR experience. The dynamics of the models and clothes are based on the personalities of the characters. Therefore, it provides an AR experience, info-sharing function and a game-like interaction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The process is very simple and is mainly controlled via the touch screen. Permission from the user's camera is required. Users need to register, let the system identify experts and enthusiasts, and then have access to the menu. First-time logged-in users will be given a short explanation before entering the official AR experience. The trigger of changing the characters is based on the distance between the phone camera and the 3D model on the screen.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: UI is designed with Principle. Xcode and reality composer are used for prototyping. Cinema 4D and Marvelous Designer are utilized for 3D modelling. For the graphic part, Adobe After Effect is used for video editing, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator is for icon and elements creating.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project is theoretically supported by Dongjin's master's final thesis at Politecnico di Milano. It summarises a design framework for conducting interactive performance, called the Variable Element System. Basically, this framework is based on two directions immersive experience and sense of ritual. Applied to Cybermoda, corresponding to the design ideas are storytelling and AR experience. It follows design thinking and uses the UX design method to analyze and research the context of the fashion show, such as competitor analysis, system map, PEST analyses, and benchmarking. Also, to emphasize the target users, Dongjin has the chance to conduct in-depth interviews with fashion insiders to better understand and emphasize one side of target users. For the other part of users, enthusiasts, she has organized a quantitative research method, an online survey, for getting insight into the young people who enthusiastic about fashion and fashion shows. At the same time, with lots of desk research on new tech, AR (augmented reality), and interactive performance, she found a system for design the interactive performance, variable element system (VES). Cybermoda uses VES as the principle. After that, she started the construction of the prototype and conducted a set of user tests.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for this project is during the empathy stage. Fashion is a traditional and historical discipline. As an interaction designer, Dongjin has fewer opportunities for getting primary research about the fashion industry. The wider and deeper the research, the better the entry point before deciding on the final design direction.
