| DESIGN NAME: Canada 150 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant art and craft installation INSPIRATION: The Canada 150 art installation celebrates Canada’s 150 anniversary and serves as a focal point and backdrop to the Faces of Canada photo contest at Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga (Ontario, Canada). Within one month, visitors of the mall were invited to take pictures in front of the art installation for a chance to win a trip for two to one of the Canadian cities. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Canada 150 art installation is an abstract 360⁰ composition of the official Canada 150 logo occupying the space of 10 cube feet. The installation provides different views at varying angles and then becomes unified when viewed from the front. To represent the elements of the composition we used multiple vibrant colours in a wrapped yarn technique. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The installation was exposed during 4 months at the Erin Mills shopping mall (Mississauga, Canada) FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials used in the project: 3 MDF premium sheets, a metal frame for hanging, 4,700 metres of yarn, 800 metres of fishing line, 210 knots, 105 hooks SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The actual size of the installation is 10 x 10 x 10 feet TAGS: Canada, Canada 150, craft, art installation, knitted installation, pendant installation, handmade RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: An important part of the work was to predict issues with proper viewing. To make sure the idea is right we built a 3D model. The hanging of all parts of the installation, which create a look of Canada leaf, was also a challenge. NAME: Erin Mills TC / 20 VIC Management Inc. PROFILE: Erin Mills Town Centre is a shopping mall located in Erin Mills, Mississauga, Ontario, it is the second-largest mall in Mississauga, after Square One. History: Erin Mills Town Centre was built on land that had been accumulated by E. P. Taylor's "Don Mills Developments" in 1954. The mall opened in 1989 and was owned and managed by Cadillac Fairview until it was purchased by the Ontario Pension Board in 2010 for $370 million (CAD). Excavation for the mall was started in 1987, and completed in 1989. There was a large clock tower at the centre of the mall, though this was replaced with a glass sphere during the (CAD) $100 million redevelopment. A Cineplex Odeon movie theatre was closed in 2000 and was replaced by Old Navy and Sport Chek stores. In addition, there was a daycare that was converted to retail space in 2005. The mall also had a mini-golf course located in the centre court, but it was converted into an upscale café. In 2008, a plaza outside the mall, but on the mall, grounds were built. The plaza consisted of Indigo Books, LCBO, and more. There was also an older plaza located on mall grounds which consisted of Dollarama, Home Sense, Menchies, and also a salon. |
