DESIGN NAME: FTW_SYMT
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Footwear fabrication innovation
INSPIRATION: How can we deconstruct the traditional upper of a shoe, making them a sustainable part and still provide a pleasing wearing experience?
The project aims projecting footwear as the second layer of skin upon the feet of daily commuters. Achieving breathability and protection similar to human skin is the major objective. In order to reach a proper balance of functionality and aesthetics, the origami technique is selected as the main theme on the entire sneaker construction.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “SYMT” stands for the geometry term “symmetry.” It is a sustainability thinking embodied as a pair of footwear: “FTW_SYMT.” The project tackles a long time cliche - the multi-layer upper construction, a sustainable production threat through the lens of the origami technique.
The experimental process utilizing various “knife pleats” proposes feasible options for footwear fabrication in balancing energy cost, craftsmanship and functionality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Based on the design brief and as the sketches forward the concept iteration, the thinking within origami experiments provided the basic logic upon the form-finding development. Pairing and pleating structure shoe reinforcement layer paves the way for the exterior design. Linen fabric is chosen as the major shoe upper material based on being widely recognized as one of the top desert clothing mediums; the chunky look of the solid midsole is referenced from the function of the mountaineering boots, maximizing the grip and support.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Sep. 2019 - Dec. 2019; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, USA.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project examines footwear origami fabrication in the scope of sustainable making and the potential of decentralized manufacturing.
“SYMT” stands for the geometry term “symmetry,” a core paradigm developed as the backbone for the project. Adopting symmetrical die cut pattern upon each component on both feet makes the total amount of steel-made molds drop to half; fusing paper-pleating technique into the mono-material fabric increases the structural strength and recyclability.
CHALLENGE: Rethinking the starting point of the typical shoe making process paves way for the design direction of FTW_SYMT. The process tree (shown in video link) investigates typical footwear manufacturing procedures starting from the dirt. The multi-layer construction made from multiple materials makes the shoes impossible moving towards the “cradle to cradle” cycle.
How can we achieve a more sustainable shoe making process that could potentially increase the chance for footwear as post consumer recycled objects? Especially the shoe upper?
