DESIGN NAME:
CO2 Molecules Visualizations

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Art Installation

INSPIRATION:
Carbon dioxide becomes more soluble in water as the temperature decreases. By analyzing the chemical bonding in the carbon dioxide and water molecules, points of intersection are used to indicate the molecules while the lines represent the chemical bondings between the elements.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project examines the relationship between human activities and carbon dioxide production. When more movement is captured, more particles are produced. This indicates more carbon dioxide molecules are released into the air during periods of increased velocity. This phenomenon provides a way to reflect on how our daily activities directly influence the global environment. With more human activities, more carbon dioxide is produced together in combination with other pollutants to inflict harm on our mother earth.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Using 3 d prototyping techniques to generate this 3 dimensional visualizations

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Due to the nature of the bonding of carbon dioxide in water molecules, carbon dioxide becomes less soluble in water as temperature increases. Below is a graph showing the solubility of carbon dioxide in water under different temperatures. As we can see in the graph, the solubility of carbon dioxide in water decreases inversely exponentially as the temperature of water increases.

CHALLENGE:
The most difficult part is the physical prototyping of the final work. There were a lot of iterations done to get to the

PROFILE:
Yingri Guan was born in Lixian, China and later lived in Changsha, Singapore and now in Bay area, US. Working on her BA in communication design, Yingri rediscovered her passion for making art of simple delight. She furthered her studies in Masters of Human-Centered Design + Interactions at the University of Washington. Now she is a full-time designer working on a wide range of projects during her daytime while making art at night. Rice has always been her staple food and she has her own theory of how different species of rice should be cooked. When she is not designing, she is always pondering about and making art. She could also be found traveling, wondering, reading or making a delicious meal.
