| DESIGN NAME: Zazen PRIMARY FUNCTION: Meditation Chair INSPIRATION: With arms gently laying on its crossed legs, Zazen chair design makes reference to a zen monk sitting still in meditation. This chair was designed to act as an attractive invitation to the here and now. Making good sitting posture and meditation appealing and accessible for those with no previous experience or physical limitations such as spine problems. This is a simple solution to make clear that no special lotus posture is required in order to connect with the present moment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: All the forms and dimensions were carefully designed to offer a very comfortable upright sitting. The backrest is precisely placed and angled for anchoring the lumbar in a comfortable erect position. Its crossed legs in front act as an elegant blockage to remind you to keep your feet aligned to the knee. The seat, inspired by the Zafu cushion used in zen meditation practices, is robust and fluffy, allowing the user to sit comfortably and awake for long periods of time. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Zazen is a versatile chair that can be used either in the interiors or in outdoor environments due to its materials. It fits well into leisure spaces for meditation and connectivity as well as for working purposes as it stimulates alertness and good posture. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of the Zazen chair was developed in February 2021 in Brazil. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: With clean and sober lines the Zazen chair is composed of three main bended aluminium pipes with bronze finishing, firmly mended together. The seat and backrest are coated with bamboo fiber and upholstered with dry foam, allowing it to be used in outdoor environments. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: width 475mm, depth 600 mm, height 730 mm TAGS: zen, meditation, conceptual chair, unusual chair,good posture, ergonomy. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main research was made in order to capture the visual language and materials present in the zen philosophy and cultural manifestations, from its vests, practices, typography, artifacts and architecture. All those informations were then abstracted and translated into a functional, unique and sophisticated piece of furniture. CHALLENGE: The great challenge here was to guarantee that its design would really fulfill its purpose of making good posture and meditation practices more accessible. For that, it was necessary to dedicate a great amount of energy to align the conceptual language with the right ergonomy, yet remaining aesthetically clean, sensual and attractive for the users.
