DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Nana

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Armchair

INSPIRATION:
Elderly people can not find furniture which suits their needs. Sofas and armchairs are too low and too soft. The inspiration came from the history of art, where a bergere in the eighteenth century was designed for lounging in comfort, with a deeper, wider seat than that of a regular fauteuil, fitted with a loose seat cushion. The other inspiration came from the Morris chair which has an adjustable back. Used characteristics enable comfortable sitting and easy getting up from the armchair.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
There is furniture designed for babies, youngsters, grownups, and... the line ends here. There is no furniture adequate for elderly people and their needs. The construction of the fauteuil is made of wood. It has higher seat than usual sofas and armchairs. The back is adjustable. The armchair has cushions on the seat and on the back which are made like mattresses. That means that they are comfortable but not too soft. Cushions come in two dimensions or hights and several materials and colors.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This armchair is different from all the others on the market because it takes into consideration the needs of 60 plus people. The height of the seat is adjustable, as well as the slant of the back. There are two different heights of the cushions for the seat and the back, 15 cm and 10 cm. They can even be combined. The armrests are wooden and solid so that one can easily get up from the chair using them as support. The armchair is firm, but it can easily be moved around the room.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Zagreb, in September of 2018. It included extensive research of the problems which elderly people have in their everyday life, because of the inadequate furniture in their homes. After that came the designing of the most problematic piece of furniture for them - the armchair. It had to be simple in form and use, solid but light to move around, higher than the usual armchair, comfortable, soft but not too soft, and it had to match the rest of their furniture.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The construction of the armchair is made out of solid wood. The high adaptability of the seat and back is achieved by the use of a simple mechanism, wooden hinges. Mattress cushions come in different designs which is not the case with the rest of the furniture or armchairs. The use of solid wood, with moveable elements and mattress cushions, made of natural materials, makes this armchair comfortable for all generations, long-lasting, and completely recyclable piece of furniture.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 760 mm x Depth 930mm x Height 1100 mm; Height of the seat 400 mm plus cushion of 100 mm or 150 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This project was developed for more than two years. It included detailed research of the needs of elderly people, their problems with the furniture as well as their wishes. The research was conducted in Zagreb, by individual interviews and visits to homes for elderly people and by online questionnaires sent all over Croatia. The response of the participants was 100 percent. That means that elderly people really face a huge problem in finding the appropriate furniture which would suit their needs

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part was to make a design that would meet the needs of elderly people, including their aesthetic criteria. Elderly people usually sit in chairs while reading or watching TV because those are higher than armchairs. Chairs are not comfortable for that purpose. Nobody designs for healthy elderly people, just the sick ones. If healthy, people 65 plus are still active, they go out, hike, they often live alone (mostly women), and they want to have nicely furnished apartments.
