DESIGN NAME: Huamei
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Private House Design
INSPIRATION: This project is inspired by nature as the homeowners are Chinese culture lovers yearning to return to a natural and authentic life. Also, this villa features Hui-style architecture elements. Designers thus extracted themes of landscape, trees and feng shui from gardens and landscape paintings of the Chinese way of life and the aesthetics of traditional Chinese culture, so as to unify the outdoor architecture and interior design, make the overall layout flexible and create authenticity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is designed for a middle-aged couple who wished to retire here. As they are fascinated by traditional Chinese culture, designers has tailored this living environment for them, which blends modernity and tradition.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The ancient-style doors and windows are the medium that connects the interior and exterior, through which the two spaces can interact harmoniously. When the French windows on the ground floor are closed, the courtyard looks like a vivid landscape painting from the main living room; when they are open, the space blends into nature and the courtyard extends the interior space. As the lady of the house has Mei (a Chinese character means plum) in her name and is a great lover of plum blossoms, designers used plum blossoms as the main motif and incorporated different forms of plum in every season throughout the design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Zhengzhou on October 1, 2019 and will be completed in Zhengzhou on December 20, 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Glass, solid wood and marble are widely used. The glass windows and doors connect the outside and inside areas and allow sunlight to get into. Durable solid wood is for environment and health protection, which can reduce the emission of harmful gases and will be more elegant after years of use. The interior is laid out in an orderly manner to meet the various needs of the owners. The colors applied are mostly dark and subdued, without complex elements, and the overall look is simple and elegant.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Henan Province in the Central Plains of China. Designers gave full play to the aesthetic art of Huizhou-style architecture and Chinese gardens in the south of China, bringing the southern garden courtyard scenery to the villa near the Yellow River region. Also, designers tried to know more about owners’ living habits and fully integrated them into designing, providing the couple with a living space that combines the beauty and comfort of traditional Chinese culture.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in the design process was to arrange the pieces in the stairwell in order to create balance with the natural world (the philosophy of feng shui). Designers first used lights to create the shape of the Big Dipper consisting of seven bright stars, signifying that the heaven and the earth each have its own principles - the Big Dipper is the heavenly principle while feng shui is the earthly. The second concerns the structure. The building itself is an irregular structure and the stairwell is a spire, and thus achieving the design effect can be challenging. Designers used the irregular structure of the villa to form different slopes to make different visual effects and levels in the stairwell.
