| DESIGN NAME: Stairs house-Cijin tha̍k tsheh PRIMARY FUNCTION: Independent bookstore INSPIRATION: The organic growth of the building is the concept. This project is located in a valley in Cijin and was built in 1910. The house was building up and side for it’s extension till 1940. It was a furniture store which was filled in with many family members and employee’s dormitory. At that time, there were 7 vertical small units became the employee’s dormitory of 8 families. Therefore, many ladders connected to individual unit and the public space. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To increase the using comfort for future community and bookstore, we removed some mezzanine floors and integrated the connection between upstairs and downstairs. Keep old openings on wall to intergrate units to big space, also create more fun from going through spaces to gain more using flexibilities. Those will improve the lighting environment. For the memory of the old building, we keep some original stairs、openings and mezzanine structures. We design staircase to match overall image. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Kaohsiung City goverment offers a portion of repair fouding for the project. National Sun Yat-sen University Department of Sociology and Kaohsiung 1st Community University cooperate in management of the bookstore in community and name it “Cijin thak tsheh”(Cijin reading). It’s a space with meanings, such as a local café, an exhibition gallery、reading space、education space and also a space to focus on local history. It’s a new community activity center . It’s also a stay and rest space for the people who were residents when they come back to the community. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 in Cijin, Kaohsiung, Taiwan and finished in August 2019. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Remove broken floor and roof. Strengthen the inclined structure. Keep the original structure forms and the memory of building. During removing and adding period, we found original old soil rock structure on lower floor and set up proper lighting to show the growth and memory of the building. The colors of vintage green and white, and cement finish are mix-and-match. The high quality of wooden floor also presents cozy feeling, and the tiles are used to decorate space. Those treats will make more highlights in space. Glass bricks make more sunlight. Mix and create a new meaning and fun for the old building. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Area: 140 square meters. Building height: 6 m. TAGS: Independent bookstore, Community, Taiwan, Cijin, Stairs, Memory, Community Construction, Placemaking, Kaohsiung RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With the building restrictions on complex living figure and construction form, we design the living space to be a fun and flexible community space and also keep the living memory to be a warm place in Neighborhood. CHALLENGE: The challenge is to reveal the memory of history from overlapping spaces.
