DESIGN NAME: IRTC MSU
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Territory Development Concept
INSPIRATION: The development concept of the Inovative Research and Technology Centre was mostly inspired by the urban and architectural context of the Moscow State University. It’s the oldest and one of the largest universities in Russia, one of the centers of national science and culture. The main building itself is one of the so-called Stalinist skyscrapers. Being located in the city, the territory is surrounded by beautiful natural areas and landscapes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The site is located on an important urban planning axis of Moscow 'Kremlin - Moscow State University'.The territory development frames the axis leaving it free for creating comfortable public spaces. The IRTC MSU is one of the components of the integral functional space planning structure of the new territory. The development is aimed at strengthening the existing and creating new functional links between future IRTC clusters and existing / future research buildings of the university.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The structure of existing and future spatial connections designed as a system of public areas (squares, squares and boulevards) will contribute to the qualitative integration of the new MSU territory into the urban fabric.
It will form a single concept of a world-class innovation ecosystem and contribute to the synergy of science and high-tech production.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2020 and will be finished in 2030.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: -
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The concept suggests the arranging of 4 functional areas:
• two of which are located symmetrical to the urban planning axis and frame the central square - 96 × 315 m each;
• the area of the central facility of the IRTC located on the urban planning axis - 60 × 44 m;
• the area of the Lomonosov cluster (construction stage I) and the interdisciplinary cluster - the size of the area is about 100 × 385 m.
TAGS: Multipurposeness, innovativeness, maximum integration into the existing architectural and urban planning context, openness to the city and to the world, future oriented
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To identify the optimal scenario for interaction of the new territory with the urban fabric, a study of similar territories was carried out (the use of a territory, the degree of openness and integration into the urban context, as well as its adaptability to various functional challenges). Based on the conducted research, a balanced scenario was adopted. This will allow the IRTC MSU to be integrated into the urban fabric as much as possible and provide convenience and comfort not only for research and education, but also for everyday life.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was the creation of a high-quality urban environment and maintaining a positive image of both the city and the IRTC MSU territory by designing a connected system of landscaped areas, which include greened public spaces of different size and purpose: city gardens, parks, boulevards and squares.
