DESIGN NAME: Inorganic
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: Tranquility and minimalism are pervasive in this space of a thirty-year-old apartment symbolizing the romanticism of a gentleman. The lines are precise and straightforward, the colors are distinct with various materials, and the door frames are all dark. The stainless-steel shelf cuts through the TV cabinet. The place speaks, with the most meticulous language. Upon entering the house, the occupant will feel the simple and inorganic aesthetics.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As an engineer, the client has his own expectations for visual consistency and integration. Overall, three elements are combined: minimalist design from industrial style, a neat sense from metal materials, and calmness from shades of gray. On the other hand, the original layout of the house is kept. The need for cabinets is minimized to show its spaciousness. The designer overcame the limitations of the long and narrow house layout, cleverly using the tall cabinets on the TV wall to create layers. Evidently, the ingenuity of perspective provided by open shelves can be seen all around the house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The client considers this apartment as an artwork. He particularly adores the consistent heights, the clear-cut lines, and the cool color tones in the house. All elements combine to give off a sense of tranquility. Nevertheless, he didn't move in shortly after the completion of the project; instead, he deliberately appreciated the space and enjoyed the modern minimalist style. With almost no closed cabinet, his personal style pervades this space, which completely meets the client's definition of sharpness, becoming a secret garden that the mind and soul belong to.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in December 2018 in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The materials in this project were deliberately chosen to avoid abrasion. Especially in woodworking, Lotos is used to cover the laminates, unifying the gray shades, creating an inorganic atmosphere. As for the kitchen, the designer used different shades of stainless steel and integrated them into clear-cut lines of a unified tone. The style of most of the furniture remains gender-neutral as the main theme. We chose a gold coffee table and bedside table to elevate the spatial aesthetics. With the yellow lights for the whole room, warmth is added to the quiet and cold-colored space.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The main challenge of an old house renovation is the rectification of the original house condition, which makes the preliminary work particularly long. It is especially true when it comes to the project. However, almost everything remains the same. The long and narrow indoor layout of 88 square meters with all windows on one wall was doubtless a difficulty. Firstly, the ceiling beams are adjusting and the upper ends of the tall cabinets are aligned with those of the door frames. Secondly, the kitchen wall was pushed out to line up with the study, so that the kitchen is open and nice.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In this project, for visual balance, extra attention was paid to the upper lines, with the heights of the ceiling beams, door frames, and open shelves all aligning. With the open shelves as the centerpiece, stainless steel materials are used extensively. Examples range from the kitchen cabinet to the closet in the bedroom, corresponding with the shades of gray and the Lotos material. The square grids of the hanging shelves in the kitchen are stainless steel with different heights providing a sense of liveliness for the space.
CHALLENGE: The lighting in this project was an obvious problem due to the placement of windows and the structure of balconies of the whole building. The house is over 30 years old, with a long and narrow layout which limits the light coming in. The designer decided to put the frosted glass on the doors of the study and the kitchen, bringing in the light from the living room. As for the floor-to-ceiling windows, translucent curtains were used to maximize the lighting in the room. It also took a long time to level the cement of the wall with the hexagonal tiles in the bathroom to make a smooth surface.
