Assistive Chair

INSPIRATION:
The design of Klaimber was heavily inspired by the detailed requirements and limitations of its innovative patented person lifting mechanism. It was important from the beginning to form a balance between technical feasibility, usability, accessibility, safety and overall design appearance. The goal was to create an assistive product that didn't look like a utility but was made to blend in with home decor, so people would welcome the product to their homes and have it ready for use whenever needed. Basically, there was a need to design a new type of chair, fit for home environment, that also functions as a person lifting device. Klaimber enables a person, who is not physically capable of normally getting up on their feet, to get up from the floor by themselves safely without a helping hand, such as a caregiver. In today's societies, people want to live at home, independent of outside help, as long as possible even in their old age or if they have limited or disabled physical abilities. For such people, a surprisingly common occurrence is that when they get on the floor, or fall down on the floor, they are unable to lift themselves up without assistance. Getting up often requires calling for help, which may take time to arrive, leaving a person helpless on the floor in an uncomfortable situation. Having Klaimber as an assistive chair increases such differently abled or senior people's independence and self-determination. They can function longer and better on their own. This also reduces the need for assistive persons such as caregivers or makes their work easier: lifting a person up is one of the most physically demanding and risky tasks. With Klaimber, the purpose was to solve one seemingly simple but surprisingly common problem differently abled and ageing people face in their lives. In ageing societies, innovative assistive products can only not help but also improve the quality of life.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Klaimber is a highly functional assistive product for differently abled and senior people. Klaimber merges a person lifting device with Scandinavian furniture design elements, cleverly hiding complex mechanics. Simplicity and harmony of the gentle swinging motion that powers Klaimber's use and thoughtful arrangement of functions create a unique and purposeful combination. Warmth and natural feel of beech wood are present in a product category that typically has bare, industrial-like utilities. As an assistive chair, Klaimber has the unique properties of allowing the seat to lower down to the floor, where the seat can be easily accessed from three different sides by a person on the floor, who then can with a simple and gentle motion of their own body lift themselves up in a seated position, safely and quickly. The seat rises to a height that allows easy access from Klaimber to an adjacent wheelchair or bed, for example. The patented lifting mechanism is housed in the chair structure, making Klaimber appear more like a chair, a piece of furniture, than an assistive device. The choice of materials, construction and the fact that Klaimber's lifting function is powered by the user's physical motion instead of electricity make Klaimber a unique proposition for an assistive device.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Klaimber is an assistive chair that functions as a person lifting device. It helps a person get up from the floor by themselves, even if their physical abilities are limited or weakened. Getting up happens with easy sideways swinging motion, without assistance. 1. You are on the floor, unable to get up on your feet, or feeling weak. You move along the floor close to Klaimber. 2. You can lower Klaimber's seat down to the floor, where it is easy and safe to slide yourself onto the seat. 3. The seat lifts up with a gentle sideways swinging motion of your body. You can use the armrests for support and stability if needed. 4. You can remain seated, stand up on your feet, or move over to a bed or a wheelchair. The armrests can be folded out of your way.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design project started in December 2018 in Oulu, Finland, and was mostly completed in six months. During product development, there was continuous additional collaboration between design and engineering. Klaimber entered production in the Summer of 2020 and had its entry to international assistive product markets in October 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Klaimber is produced with efficiency without compromising its aesthetic flow. The self-supportive mono-line frame is bent from one length of a metal tube, and its characteristic continuity enables it to even act as a handle for moving the chair around. The continuous floor-level form of the tube legs provide stability and also allow flexible accessibility onto the chair from three sides, which is important for the design to allow its user easy access to and exit from the chair in assistive scenarios. Similar lines bring forward chair controls that are needed for use, while rest of the mechanical components are hidden behind the seated user, cleverly housed in a beech wood casing that, together with all other components of interaction, presents a natural material and visual balance for an assistive chair made with the users and their homes in mind.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In order to validate the viability of a completely new innovation, Klaimber Person Lifting Chair, Kailamed wanted to know the opinions of its potential users. The research work was done in collaboration with Camp Mobility, which is responsible for product distribution to its many target groups. The research work was carried out as a quantitative study, in two different part and two different surveys. The study was based on an analysis of the large number of respondents and their responses. The first survey was conducted by email among caregivers in the Spring of 2019, where 68 responses were received. The second survey was conducted at a commercial exhibition Apuvaline 2019 - The Fair for Assistive Technology and Accessibility with professionals of assistive devices, where 120 responses were received. Kailamed Oy wants to keep the research background material confidential and not publish it. In the theoretical framework, the research process and market segments from various literature sources and articles were studied. In addition, assistive device services and related business as part of the Finnish healthcare were briefly reviewed. The practical research part focused on the method of quantitative research and the construction of the survey itself. The results of research show that there is a demand among the target market for a new product, the design of which had taken into an account advances of deep customer insight. The target groups were clearly interested in mechanical functional furniture that would meet the need for independent living both at home and service houses. Klaimber is very likely to bring also savings to society through a reduction in on-call situations in care homes.

CHALLENGE:
The main creative challenge was to fuse a highly mechanical, powerful patented lifting mechanism with a design that would be aesthetic and pleasing as home furniture. Another creative challenge included designing a form for the chair frame and legs that allowed easy access to the chair from many directions (front, left, right) and yet provided stability and safety for users with various levels of physical capability. From user-friendliness perspective, the requirement and challenge was to achieve simplicity and design an easy to understand & operate human interface with as few knobs, handles and interface elements as possible.
