| DESIGN NAME: Classic Beauty Leather Boot PRIMARY FUNCTION: Leather Hand Welted Boot INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by the beauty of Renaissance heritage in Florence, Italy, where I captured the moment, the people, vibes, colours during my stay in this romantic city and yet, transforming it into my pieces of works. I have combined different materials, colours, techniques and constructions to reopen the dialogue of arts and crafts into shoes. Not only a classic tradition, this collection of design aim to give gentle styles of living in the modern life. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Classic Beauty is a collection to call for culture sustainability. All elements were carefully selected, designed and made by designer Shiau. Fully hand welted construction, using very traditional way which can be traced back to 16th century, of a particular technique to form a pair. However, the outlook of design is totally fresh and stylish. Two tone colours interacted architecture in Renaissance art, unique pattern with details. Elegant and smooth. Overall, Classic Beauty gives wearers a comfortable touch yet durability from time to time. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This boot design can be worn both formally and casually, perfect for any occasion.The design is comfortable and easy wear on, with carefully designed proportion, metal eyelets to easily tighten up shoe laces. To talk more about details performed with the wearers. This boot has a cap toe design, with brogues and pattern corresponding to the symbol of Florence Flora, blooming in the front. On the back, there were brogues designed like a shape of a leaf, flowing at the ankle side. Aside from usual geometric shapes for brogues, this boot design also uses organic lines to break the imagination of traditional brogues in men's wear. Furthermore, playing around the lapping between pieces is another spot light for this design. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The collection started in August 2016 in Florence, Italy and finished in April 2018 the same city, exhibited at Numeroventi in May 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Comfortability is one of the main concerns when I thought about Classic Beauty collection.The core materials are leathers, selected in high quality standards, made in Italy. The upper was made of middle calf with beautiful light creamy brown, while lining using small calf in colour yellow. For the bottom part, both insole and outsole are leather. Heel tip half rubber for better attachment to the ground. Metal eyelets. Goodyear hand welted construction, in which both upper, lining, welt, outsole and insole were combined together firmly, giving strong structure for this boot design. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: European standard men size 42, heel height 3cm TAGS: Gentle, Leather, Boots, Shoes, Design, Culture, Shoemaking, Handmade RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Making a pair of handmade shoes needs hundreds of steps and efforts, I was surprised, there were not much young people in the world doing this job. This technique, one day, will fade away if no one passing down the knowledge. Culture Sustainability, a concept I want to call for protecting the heritage of crafts and handmade shoes. Combining creativity, an old tradition could also transform into new look of wearing art. This project started from an inspiration board, basically it came from everywhere around me, it can be a feeling or how I see things in different perspectives, or trend research from exhibitions. It can also be a line, a shadow, colours, history…Then it came out from a piece of leather and sketches. Later on was to transform two dimensions into three dimensions, with many times of tests for the purpose of perfectly transforming the design from my head. When the pattern is done, the design can be fully started into the next step. Clicking, upper making, making insole and thread, lasting, grooving, hand welted, bottoming outsole, putting heels, taking out last and finishing. Photos were taken in Florence to connect the background inspirations. In 2018, the project was exhibited under the exhibition Shoemaking Appartamento. It was the recent first ever shoe making event held in Florence with members from multicultural backgrounds. To call for passing down and cherishing traditional handmade shoes culture. CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to find the balance between aesthetics and practicality. During design process, I have constantly thought, not only to remain the design idea I wanted but also coordinate well with the human body. The lapping between facing, quarter, and vamp is one of uniqueness in this design but also the big challenging part. Instead of the vamp underneath the quarter, in this design the quarter is underneath the vamp, with a long thin L shape strip on the very top. The pattern was well designed to correspond to the original aesthetics. Many trials before production, ending with this Classic Beauty you can see now from the pictures. NAME: Shiau Atelier PROFILE: A brand under the name of shoemaker and designer, SHIAU. She was born in Taiwan, a little tropical island located in the heart of Asia. Now create her works based in Taipei and Firenze. SHIAU's shoes and art work are the fusion of east and west, inspired by her life perception in Europe and Asia. She loves the vibes of vintage, art atelier and handmade, which bring up to her uniqueness. Using experimental methods redefine "old good stuff", SHIAU aims to create elegant pieces for the wearers. |
