DESIGN NAME:
Friendly Wood

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Kitchen Knife Assistant

INSPIRATION:
During the research, I found that more than half of those who are blind had experience of getting cut while cooking in the previous two years. They got cut while cutting and because they could not see where the knife was, they often got cut while trying to find the knife which was right next to the cutting board. By interviewing blind people and doing the user testing with prototypes over and over, I could’ve found a perfect way of solving those problems.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Friendly Wood is designed for those who are blind, a beginner in cooking, and children to adapt easily and safely to the cutting environment. It does not only protect the user from getting cut but also corrects the posture of their hand so that the user can use the knife safer without it in the future. It always makes the knife’s blade face down when not using. And it comes with a cutting board as a set and is designed to be stored together so the user can easily use them together all the time.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
You can store it easily with a cutting board as a set. it perfectly fits together and becomes a one-piece. Step to use: 1. Put Friendly Wood in front of you and bring the knife next to it. Then the knife will stick to it because of the magnet. 2. Pull it out and put your fingers in the product. 3. On the object you want to cut, Smoothly slide down. 4. When you are done cutting or you need other things to cut, put your knife next to the cutting board. (The blade will be always facing down) 5. After all, wash it with water and store it with a cutting board.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2020 in South Korea and finished in December 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The main body is made with silicone (Injection molding), which could be bent on the surface of the object you want to cut. The structure which connects silicone and wood is made of stainless steel. It does not rust from the water & food and strong enough to connect those two pieces. The wooden piece, which is made of maple wood (CNC milling), is strong enough to bear the blade of a knife. It is a material that the blade can smoothly slide, but not too slippery.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Friendly Wood itself: 76.2 mm x 27.43 mm x 58.42 mm Friendly Wood with cutting board: 203.2 mm x 311.15 mm x 58.42 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I Interviewed a person who lost his vision seven years ago. He is used to his life right now, but he felt incompetent when he first lost his sight. He was even depressed when he got lost in front of his house. One of his biggest struggles was cooking. Even though he had an experience of cooking before, it was a hugely different situation without his vision. I saw the scars on his hand and decided to design a kitchen knife assisting product, for those who are in the early stage of blindness, to help easily and safely adapt to the cutting environment. During the research, I found that more than half of those who are blind had experience of getting cut while cooking in the previous two years. They got cut while cutting and because they could not see where the knife was, they often got cut while trying to find the knife which was right next to the cutting board. Also, users that are blind find it difficult to learn the proper way of using a knife at first.

CHALLENGE:
I had to do user testing several times during the process of developing the product because I am not blind. The most challenging part was the grip. In the early prototypes, the user had a hard time finding the right way of using the product. There was a possibility that the user could get more dangerous. For the materials used in the product, I interviewed an expert who works in the field of kitchenware. He suggested that I change the material of the part that the knife slides because the silicone could easily get damaged by the blade. Also, he said that the living hinge of the cutting board is not a great choice.
