| DESIGN NAME: Funode PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Sofa INSPIRATION: The Funode modular seating system is designed for an office area. The designer rethinks how the challenges of the pandemic affect people's work, communication, and relaxation and how to let people feel connected while social distancing. The Funode fits into various spaces and can be customized to each individual's needs creating an engaging and flexible addition to office space. Each modular unit serves one function and creates a unique environment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Funode collection has three sets of pieces: armless modular, corner modular, and side table sets. Each module has a soft and cozy feeling when sitting. Through different combinations, the system can serve different area needs. When separate, the smallest module turns into a single chair. It can act as a fun break space for workers to relax, and also a business space; Or serve as a smaller bench and side table that can hold laptops and documents. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The collection is composed of smaller chair units, one corner unit and one side table unit. Funode encourages active movement and spatial control. Users are welcome to move and combine pieces to suit their needs. This collection offers unlimited possibilities to create fun and flexible workspaces. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Frames are made with kiln-dried hardwood and are connected with steel pipes. After assembly, frames are wrapped in high-density polyurethane foam, combined with a fine layer of fiber, providing extra seating comfort. Elastic knitted fabric is used as upholstery, and sewn seams are hidden on the bottom to create a clean look. The side table is made up of 10-gauge (3.57mm thickness) steel, with laser cut production. NAME: Yumeng Gai PROFILE: Yumeng Gai is a furniture designer graduating from Rhode Island School of Design. In her design work, creating identities for furniture is the main concept. Furniture is creatures like other living things on this planet. They have their emotion and expectation of the world, and they eager to participate in our daily life. Yumeng is interested in building interactive relationships between furniture, humans, and the surrounding environment, and creating an environment where humans and furniture respect, love, and take care of each other. And during the interaction process, furniture enhances their unique identities. |
