DESIGN NAME: Whispering Peninsula
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hostel
INSPIRATION: The client and the designer of this project, in response to the fierce competition in Taiwan's lodging industry, which is similar in style, are trying to seek innovation and change. This project is a residential conversion to a B&B, under the constraints of the budget and the building itself, the designer used interior finish as a supplement, furnishing as the main, shaping the atmosphere of affordable luxury and American countryside space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The designer has installed the windows in the two-person rooms behind the bed and created a floor-to-ceiling facade between the two. Considering the clientele of the four-person rooms is mainly families, the colorful of the room create a world for children to enjoy. Different from the energetic rooms on the second and third floors, the desaturated stucco walls of the fourth-floor rooms are not only waterproof but also provide a respite for eyes stimulated by the complex colors of the city.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Taking advantage of Hengchun's climate, warm throughout the year, and ample sunshine, the designer installed a heat pump on the roof to pair with the air-conditioning and to help circulate water, realizing the concept of energy conservation and sustainability. The old design was covered with woodwork and the doors were not removed, thus reducing the amount of construction waste. The vegetation wall at the main entrance not only serves as an indicator of separation from the neighboring houses but also as a green finish that echoes the lush spring colors.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This construction lasted four months and was completed in July 2020 in Hengchun Township, Pingtung County.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project consists of four levels and includes a kitchen and a living room on the first floor, and guest rooms on the second, third, and fourth floor.
TAGS: Starry sky, accommodation, affordable luxury, American country style
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer has created a blend of American country style and affordable luxury style, hoping that the footsteps of each traveler will enrich the story of the entire scene. On the first floor, the open-plan space with wooden beams on the ceiling gives a rustic feel, while the streamlined woodwork bar acts as a watershed between the dining and living areas, accommodating multiple people in a limited space and maximizing functionality and visual scale. Rooms on the second, third, and fourth floors are in respective styles depending on the guest's needs.
CHALLENGE: Due to budgetary constraints and the fact that the original structure was covered with wood grain tiles both in and out, it was a challenge to incorporate the clients vision and the designers ideas into the preexisting space. The joint-connected streamline bar was a time-consuming project due to the limitations of the materials and the coordination with the construction workers. For the motorized window on the ceiling of the fourth-floor guest room, the wiring arrangement and the need to match the position and height of the chandelier hanging below made the installation more difficult.
