DESIGN NAME: Viral Budding
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Self Promotional
INSPIRATION: The artist is a certified medical illustrator working in the advertising and marketing of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Self promotional work created for clients, and prospective clients, is a chance to promote the artist's creativity, artistry and storytelling skills in visual science.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Contemplating the respiratory ravages of severe coronavirus, the artist depicted the lung epithelial cells as a planetary landscape, immersed in a cyanotic, watery underworld. Viral budding from the plasma membrane of lung epithelial cells enables coronaviruses to exit the host cell after infection and replication. This initiates a cytokine storm, a sudden over-response all at once from an immune system gone awry, producing an inflammatory response flaring out of control.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This work depicts a frozen moment in time, memorializing the assault upon the lungs of SARS-CoV-2, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was in development for two weeks at the artist's studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, USA.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The artist researched the morphology of the coronavirus. She then imported lipid protein models from the Orientations of Proteins in Membranes database into Cinema 4D to create the virion’s lipid bilayer transmembrane. She then added the spike protein and surface protein from the Protein Data Bank. The artist brought the rendered virus into Photoshop. The rest of the digital painting was completed by hand work, drawing and painting in Photoshop, using a stylus and tablet, on a Mac.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge is to impart context and visual impact to accurate biomedical science.
