DESIGN NAME: Thermona
PRIMARY FUNCTION: To sanitize furniture automatically
INSPIRATION: I am inspired by the doctors who are working very hard for the society day and night in this pandemic, so even I wanted to contribute something to society. I have worked only once in my design career till now to design something for the society or to design a product which creates a social impact. War on virus came up as a great opportunity for me to do design something which not only solves a problem but also helps to lessen the spread of COVID-19. The spread of coronavirus in public places such as airports is increasing day by day and it is really hard for the people to manage and sanitize each and everything that is present in the airports. People often sit and wait for their flights and those pieces of furniture can be a source of spreading coronavirus as the seats are very close to each other. It is very tough for the authorities to clean and sanitize the furniture every timea user sits and leaves. I have tried my best to come up with a product basically a piece of furniture that helps in reducing the human effort to sanitize it again and again. It also helps in maintaining social distance as well. The design of this product is inspired by the people who make furniture of bamboo and cane and the technological part is inspired by a soldering iron which will indeed prove a useful and efficient solution to the problem.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Thermona is a furniture for public places especially for airports that sanitizes itself using heat and
helps the user to maintain social distance as well. It reduces human effort and the use of sanitizer. It
gets heated till 59-degree Celcius with the help of a temperature controller. Since COVID-19 is not able to
survive and it does not harm the human skin.
Thermona is a piece of furniture made of copper tubes that get heated and sanitizes itself with the help of
electrical energy and saves electrical energy as well. Thanks to PIR (passive infrared sensor) range 50cms.
Each chair of the furniture is fitted with four PIR sensors which will detect human presence.
Thermona will heat up for 20 minutes when a user sits on it and will heat up again for 20 minutes when the user
leaves. This will save a lot of electrical energy. It can be more efficient if powered by solar energy.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user just has to sit on this piece of furniture that is it, the furniture will do the task on its own. It will lessen the spread of coronavirus by sanitizing itself on its own. It is in fact a piece of smart furniture, the technology, and materials used to make it perform better than conventional furniture used in airports. It can be used in hospitals and public places as well.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: I have worked on this project for around 2 months simultaneously on my other submissions as well. I worked on it from my home due to lockdown.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Technology
The technology in this furniture is inspired by a soldering iron.
A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into
the joint between two workpieces. It is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle.
Heating is often achieved electrically, by passing an electric current through a resistive heating element.
Materials :
Why Copper?
Copper is good conductor of heat and it is an antimicrobial material as well.COVID-19 is not able to survive on
copper more than six hours.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 2000 mm x 9000 mm x 800mm
The length of this product is 9000mm on maximux assumption on how long the product can be. To save space it can be shorter in lenght and can be placed consecutively.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I followed the design process which includes research as well. The tools I used for my user research was a queationaire who recently traveled, telephonic interview and secondary research.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this research was to find a user who has recently traveled in this time of the pandemic. Even I traveled from my institute to my home town and at that time only I identified this opportunity area. And it gave me a lot of insights.
