DESIGN NAME: CORABOX-M1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable UV sterilizer
INSPIRATION: When COVID-19 touched almost everyone, we, as designers, immediately thought about what we can do to improve the situation? We wanted to help people feel more secure, but at the same time free from new constraints. As a result, we turned our attention towards personal protective equipment. In this area, we have found that used medical masks pose a major environmental problem. So the idea of a device for disinfecting masks, smartphones and other things came about.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The device is designed to sterilize smartphones, other gadgets, accessories, glasses, cards, banknotes and many other things that you have to contact every day. It can also be used as a power bank and wireless charger, making it convenient when traveling. A separate function allows you to clean medical masks in shifts. While one mask is in use, the other is in the sterilizer. The device reminds you when you need to swap them. This extends the life cycle of the masks and saves the environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After pressing on the top, the spring mechanism is triggered and the body unfold. Then the lid is opened and the object to be sterilized is placed on the transparent platform. Then the lid is closed, and the sterilization process starts automatically. If replace mode is enabled, then when the mask is placed on the platform and the lid is closed, the sterilization process and the timer for reminding about replace masks will automatically start. The device signals the occurrence of events.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2020 in Moscow. The final concept finished and patent applications were created in July 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As a result of the analysis of all means of sterilization, UV radiation turned out to be one of the most effective. We have investigated a wide range of UV sterilizing devices and found one common drawback in them - incomplete coverage with direct UV radiation. Part of the surface is left untreated or is only exposed to reflected light, which reduces efficiency. Using geometric experiments, we have created a device that irradiates an object from all sides and at the same time has a compact size.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult task was to combine the high efficiency of sterilization due to direct irradiation of the entire surface and the compact size, which makes the device easy to carry. The result was the idea of a folding telescopic body and placing UV LEDs in the corners of the working chamber. This also allowed the use of a lower center niche that does not interfere with the irradiation of objects. This is how a "hill" was created to house the battery and other electronic components.
