INSPIRATION:
Unlike the virus floating in the supermarket, the virus stuck to product packaging are inevitable. These viruses may come from customers' contact with the product packaging when selecting the product, or it may come from the factory workers. We cannot keep all people who are in contact with the product hygienic. Therefore, the most effective way to sterilize supermarket goods is to sterilize the goods before customers take them home. So the idea of the check-out sterilizer came into being.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Commodities may be contaminated by viruses at most of the links from produce to sale. Supermarketer is a commodity sterilizer that can be placed on the conveyor belt of the supermarket cash register. It can kill most viruses that spread to people. Its inspiration comes from the X-ray machine at the airport security check. It uses ultraviolet light to disinfect the products that are about to be checked out, to prevent customers from bringing the virus home.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Supermarketer needs to be erected on the conveyor belt of the cash register. The wrench on the bottom can be used to adjust the width of the bracket to suit the cash register of different widths. Then adjust the length of the box according to the type of germs needed to be killed to ensure that the goods stay in the box for a proper time duration. When customers check out, they shall put the goods on the conveyor belt of cash register to complete the disinfection automatically. Customers can use the hand sanitizer distributer installed on Supermaketer when passing it and then touch clean goods with clean hands.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2020 in The Netherlands and finished in June 2020 in China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The core function of this product, ultraviolet disinfection, can be achieved using 265nm LED ultraviolet lamp beads, which have strong power and small size and are widely sold on the market. As for the main body of this product, it is only used to support the ultraviolet lamp and create a closed dark space, which can be made by plastic vacuum forming and fibers.

CHALLENGE:
The purpose of this project is to prevent the virus from spreading through the packaging of goods in supermarkets. The hardest part of this project is how to minimize the impact on supermarket operations and consumers' shopping experience while disinfecting the products. We have envisaged using a shopping cart with UV disinfection function or asking people not to put the products they touched back to the original place but to put them in a designated disinfection area. But these methods are not able to isolate all viruses. It may affect the shopping experience of customers or greatly increases the operating costs of supermarkets.
