M 101

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Protective mask

INSPIRATION:
The lack of professional protective facilities raised the need to find a correct answer for workers. But the use of the provided onces made us think of a sustainable solution. We got inspired by modern user-adjustable systems (kit, 3D printing, shoe, outfits, object customisation). We transferred those approaches and skills over the function of a protective mask but also developed a user-friendliness process to give workers opportunities to get a mask meeting their morphology and daily needs

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
M 101 is an eco-friendly protective mask designed for workers. It is conformed to many metier and work environments due to its modularity. It includes a wide range of pieces available online, insuring companies to provide the proper protection to their employees. Ties, clips and facilities options fit the mask to worker’s equipment and morphology. Plus, compagnies can pick a colour and lay a logo onto. Thus, all the pieces together certify the use of the right protection against potential danger.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Unlike single use protective mask, the M 101 system is designed for multiple metier and meant to last. To provide a tailored and convenient daily protection, a platform using the 3D scan technology ensures an ergonomic design of the mask. Its valuable aspect lies on a plurality of replaceable items, aiming to recomposed the mask or add colours to make it unique. A decontamination case using UV-C technology is provided with, which makes the use of the mask adjustable, reusable and sustainable.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project begun mid-may 2020 under the call of the French organisation "Les Designers Français". The competition ended-up mid-June 2020 with a public vote and now allowed the project to be on the rise.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The totality of the M-101 components are biobased and made in France. The solid pieces are made from Algoblend, composed of brown seaweed and recycled plastic (resistant and hypoallergenic). Watertightness supple piece is made from Platinium silicone (odorless, hydrophobic and bacteriostatic). The piece is tooled via a 3D printer or plastic injection. Meltblown FFP2 filter is inserted between two linen layers (natural fiber, antibacterial). Straps are made with Fulgar (inert and elastic), castor oil composed. Accessories with a biodegradable and recyclable material like Ingeo, agricultural waste based (transparent, printable, uv resistant).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Sustainability and adaptability is our design objective. Divers investigations on european morphology were made and remains, to build a representative sample and helping us to provide correct sizes of the masks. We opted for bio based matters to guarantee a low impact on the environment, as best on the fabrication process than during and after the use of the protection, that ensure a long-lasting design and its recycling.

CHALLENGE:
We were challenged to create a pertinent device that had to last and be sustainable. We had to find a user-adjustable way to fight cons due to single-use mask to fulfil divers needs, then determined them. A complexity lied into the development of the interface to make it intuitive and drive the user through all stages of the customisation. About ergonomic, a dilemma remains to choose how to determine masks models as they depend on a 3D scan that is a morphological analysis creating a databank.
