DESIGN NAME: River
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Novel Instrument Design,Live Performance
INSPIRATION: “No one can step into the same river twice.”
This instrument, named as River, contains rules and randomness.
What exactly is music and how does it connect to and shape our form? Traditional musical instruments always have fixed physical forms that require performers to adjust to them. How about making a musical instrument that is more fluid and more expressive via deforming according to performers’ movements? This was the question the artist attempted to explore when Nie started making this project.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “River“ is the name of the novel musical instrument Nie made and also the name of the live performance she used this instrument to play music designed by herself. It was originally a project she made for a class called NIME: New Interface for Musical Expression. Then this instrument and live performance are invited to showcase in times squares, local live houses in NYC, 2019 international NIME conference, 2020 Currents New Media Festival and other places.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A novel instrument designed for live performance or music amateur.
For this project, Nie combine the movement of dancing with music to present a fluid and dynamic shape of musical instrument.
This musical instrument generates sound by detecting different movements of the performer. It has four different modes selected by toggling the switches on the instrument interface. Each mode has different movement detection methods, generating various sound and music. Moreover, it can be played as Tambourine. As for the music in my performance, it’s all played by the artist lively, consisting of different sound triggered and changed by performers’ gestures and melody composed myself.
Like the name of this instrument River, the four toggles and their detection methods and their corresponding generated sounds are intentionally designed. From simple node, beat, loop, drum, to various node, melody, music, the detection methods and their triggered sounds are becoming more and more complex and various, developing like a journey of a river.
The performance tells a story about a river:
River knows this: there is no hurry.
We shall get there someday.
The artist see the river as the extension of her body.
More intuitive than narrative, more fleeting than infinite,
the river rises, falls, flows and meanders,
and she follows the journey.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It’s created in New York for 3 months since 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This instrument combines the circuit design, computing technique, machine learning, fabric, sound design and dance. It’s portable, very light and small, and can be carried very easily. It’s rechargeable and wireless, sending data to the computer lively which largely benefits the player to expressively use it to make music.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: “A Transmitting tambourine ” with a long fabric.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For the novelty of this instrument, all Nie's design thinking starts from three words: Fluidity, Expressivity and Intuition.
She breaks the instrument down to three parts: shape, sound, function, and start to think about their relationship with human gesture.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge here is to break the rule or our current impression for music instruments. How about making a musical instrument that is more fluid, more expressive and more intuitive?
