| DESIGN NAME: Office Stretcher PRIMARY FUNCTION: Workplace Furniture INSPIRATION: People today are generally facing ever-increasing pressure both mentally and physically, which is especially evident in people who live and work in busy metropolises. The project is designed to help build a better workplace environment in crowded, chaotic, and complex cities. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Office Stretcher is a modular and self-assembling office furniture aims to improve the workplace environment by stimulating tangible interactions. The stretch in the name indicates the stretching of the body, space, and time. For body, Office Stretcher assists the users to take workplace-proper body stretches to address wellness; for space, Office Stretcher compresses various office spaces into multifunctional compact zones; and for time, it helps improve work efficiency. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Office Stretcher is a multifunctional product designed for the workplace environment. By facilitating tangible interactions, Office Stretcher helps improve productivity, engagement, and mental and physical health and, consequently, benefiting both individuals and organizations. Through the purity of its form, structure, and material, Office Stretcher reflects a modern minimalist aesthetic. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2017 in Rochester and finished in May 2018 in Rochester, and was exhibited in Vignelli Center Gallery in May 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Office Stretcher is a modular and self-assembling product. Its components include pre-welded carbon steel tubes, plastic tube connectors, and grooved wood boards which can be assembled with the carbon steel tubes by recessing. With its self-assembling feature, Office Stretcher enables the users to use, transform, and transport it easily and conveniently. With its modularity feature, Office Stretcher adapts to various sizes of workplaces and accommodates different amounts of users. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1100 mm x 1100 mm x 1700 mm for the single unit presented in the images; size varies for modularity. TAGS: furniture design, workplace environment, tangible interaction, office wellness, modular furniture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Starting from the Basic Organizational Model, the research was focused on how different elements influence people in the workplace environment and how those elements can be optimized by means of design. After the preliminary design was made, user research centered on usability testing was also conducted to optimize the product's ergonomic traits. CHALLENGE: Leveraging modularity with user-centered design thinking, this design provides an innovative method of how people interact in the workplace environment. With Office Stretcher, there are more possibilities for people to interact with each other, with the office furniture, and with the organization.
