DESIGN NAME: Esperanza
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Disinfection Station
INSPIRATION: My main inspiration was on how health professionals taking care of life and how they are teaching us how to stay safe, washing our hands, and how to properly protect our faces with masks. This furniture piece was made to be useful and helpful.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designed all in copper, this station was created to help sanitize fabric masks that people need to wear during the day. It was thought to reunite all the functions in a single place, so the user does not have to worry about all the process to make the masks usable again for the next day of work. The copper is the only material which the virus survives for just a few hours, so if people use the station in the morning and again in the afternoon, they will minimize the risk of contagion when touching it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Esperanza station has a little tank to pour water and bleach (on proportion recommended by the World Health Organization) to wash fabric masks for 4 minutes. The user then can put them to dry on the hangers and put it on the packages to use during the day. Then, they can drain the water to wash shoes and other things that could have contact with the virus on the streets.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2020 and is still on the concept phase.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main material is a bend vaccum molded sheet of copper and aluminium (to minimize oxidation), because viruses have a short life on copper surfaces (about 4 hours) and that helps to stop contamination.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 950mm x 400mm x 750mm. The product was thought to be useful even after the pandemic. That is the motive its dimensions are close to a small sideboard or side table
TAGS: mask, disinfection, self-care, combat, prevention
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My main concern was to talk with health professionals to understand the process and materials that could help decrease contact with the virus.
CHALLENGE: On this moment the hard part is about our mental health, the challenge with this project was trying to help people with my work at the same time that we fight this worldwide health problem.
