DESIGN NAME:
Ayama

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Calming Device

INSPIRATION:
For centuries yogis have used pranayama to promote concentration and improve vitality. These yoga breathing techniques can support the parasympathetic nervous system and activate what is commonly known as the "relaxation response," reducing stress and its effects on our body and mind. It can be an excellent method to help us deal with our daily emotional problems and pressures. However, it couldn't work well without the proper guide. Therefore, we want to design a product that enables people to do an appropriate pranayama practice anytime and anywhere if they need it.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Ayama is an emotional health care device that helps users dealing with their workplace or social anxiety by assisting users in getting into meditation. It guides users' rhythmic breathing by expand and contract itself in the user's hands. The four modes of Ayama are under the theoretical support of pranayama (yoga breathing techniques). Ayama simplifies the complex process of pranayama and enables users to practice correctly at any time and anywhere. Primarily Ayama can help users achieve emotional well-being. Also, the emergence of this kind of product would awake people's awareness of emotional health.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The user can activate Ayama by long-pressing the only button on its side, then short press to change the mode. Once selected a mode, the user needs to hold Ayama with two hands and breath along with the guide of Ayama. Once Ayama is running out of battery, the user should put it back to the sand plate for recharge.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2019 in the US and finished in June 2019. It won the iF design talent award in October.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The expansion and contraction of Ayama are imitating the movements of a human lung. So we assume the final realization of Ayama should be an inner moving mechanism covered with a soft elastic material. The inner part two pieces of hard shells are joint with one rotation shaft, and we will use a motor to provide power to the rotation shaft to achieve push and pull movement. Then we can use programming to the motor to control the speed of expansion and contraction, to imitate a rhythmical breathing lung of a pranayama master.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Ayama is an egg-shaped handheld device with 80mm*50mm*40mm while expanding and 80mm* 50mm* 30mm while contract. The sand plate charger part is 200mm diameters* 30mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Emotional health refers to wellbeing and the way someone views, lives and closely related to our wellness. Everybody suffers the emotional ups and downs in daily life, especially, in this fast-paced era, the fluctuation of daily emotion appears to be more fierce and erratic.

CHALLENGE:
In the current market, most of the existing yoga/meditation/breath tutorial products are guiding users via sound or visual works. However, both sound and visual works will cause distraction and decrease users' concentration levels. Ayama guides users' rhythmic breath via the sense of touch by expanding and contracting itself in users' hands. This solution not only allows users to close their eyes and get highly concentrated but also helps users keep their hands in a correct yoga posture.
