DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Unity

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Street Furniture

INSPIRATION:
While observing birds flying in nature, other animals in the city were imagined. Inspiration came from the need to provide a seating unit for children to be friends with animals, shelter for animals of the street that encounter harsh conditions, different seat heights for diverse people, opportunities for bikers, a light source for night use. Unity is an environment, user and animal friendly street furniture that will act as a landmark within the environment.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Unity is a street furniture designed for uniting people, animals and nature. It triggers peer communication and establishes close relationships with animals and nature. Unlike existing street furniture, Unity is designed with two different seating levels for diverse user groups to sit and rest, provides shelter for animals, bicycle racks for bikers, light for night use and incorporates nature into the design. It acts as a landmark within the environment by incorporating its unique properties.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Unity has two seat heights of wooden slats for diverse users (children and adults). Two bicycles can be parked in between the metal racks on one side. The unit in the middle serves as a planter that forms the backrest and where the bicycle racks can be installed. Underneath the seating unit LED lighting is provided that illuminates its surrounding at night. Two openings are provided for animals to use as their homes. Unity modules can be placed in parks to enhance group interactions.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The idea of designing the project started in October 2019 in Ankara, Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Concrete, wood and metal are proposed in the seating unit due to their durability to exterior conditions, ease of cleaning, maintenance, reproducibility and suitability for outdoor use. The color of the materials can be adapted to the surrounding environment. LED lighting is provided underneath the seating units that is sensitive to daylight and illuminates its surrounding at night.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Length 105 cm x width 105 cm x height 75 cm, seat height for children 30 cm, for adults 45 cm. The seat is for two people on one side, however its modular design allows for expansion.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
People, animal and nature relationship was researched in design of the street furniture. The size of the mass was determined by examining existing street furniture, considering the ratio and proportions of each element and adhering to the child and adult sitting. Bicycle parking racks, planters and shelters for animals are included for environment friendly diverse users. It can illuminate the surrounding at night. Concrete, wood and metal materials are chosen due to their resistance to external conditions.

CHALLENGE:
Designing street furniture that incorporates more than one function since each function is designed as a separate product. This furniture connects people, animals and nature. The challenge was to combine the five functions of sitting and resting for diverse users, shelter for animals, parking for bicycles, planter and lighting. In addition, it has to act as a landmark within the environment.
