DESIGN NAME: Abstract Extract
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Temporary Gallery
INSPIRATION: There was quite a narrow and high space between the constructions. That complicated viewing of the whole work. It became clear that we needed to create a quiet and cozy space within the malls fuss.
Abstract work a working with large color patches was inspired by a spring mood and patterns around the space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Within the framework of shopping mall renovation, the decision had been made to create a temporary gallery as a starting event of the art season. Some rooms were separated by temporary constructions. We were offered to use the existing advertising banners. Mostly, we worked step by step during off hours. The visitors had an opportunity to watch the whole gallery creation process. The temporary gallery included four authors works of various formats and one activation together with visitors.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A narrow corridor between the constructions was located slightly aside from major visitors flow and It has become a secluded corner for resting from the malls fuss. We insisted on putting some upholstered furniture in this zone. People were attracted by large colorful patches, mirror elements interacted with the LED screen on the opposite side. That produced movement and dynamics effect. In this zone one could have a rest from shining lights of shop windows, talk on the phone or just lull a baby.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The fullscale temporary gallery was lunched on April 12, 2019 at MegaMall premises in Kazan. It was closed in September 2019 once all renovation works had been completed. That was actually longer than initially planned.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The gallery performed a temporary function. First, we needed to consider initial construction requirements for the location renovation. On the next stage of research, we studied visitors behavior scenarios and routes. It was obvious that some zones were most active, and some were empty. There was a need to distribute the flows to several scenarios. Basing on the flows, four interaction zones were developed as well as technologies which were the best to utilize special features of different zones: from the most active and loaded to the calmest and quietest. Each zone was targeted at attracting attention of different visitors groups.
CHALLENGE: For each surface of the temporary gallery, different interaction methods and technologies were developed. It was directly related to works of different teams and contractors. Parts of constructions were relocated and disassembled during construction works. It was necessary to structure the stages of work and control third party contractors. Interaction and behavior scenarios were not always obvious. We had to revise functionality of various parts of the gallery. Abstract works are most difficult to understand. We had to provide good reasons for our actions.
