Interview with Alsu Biryukova at Friday 1st of May 2020 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AB: Most of all I am inspired by people, their traditions, characters, stories, fates. And of course, the extraordinary beauty of our planet. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AB: I was very inspired by the idea of the Great Silk Road. This adventure, and surprise, and anticipation, and loss, and knowledge, and new discoveries, and extraordinary nature, and the most important idea of uniting East and West, which is very close to me. I wanted to tell you about it in a beautiful design language that is accessible to me. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AB: The bulk of the collection has already been sold out, but I plan to expand this collection. These new things will be lighter, inspired by dawn and spring. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AB: It took about a month to develop the concept, and the collection itself was created about a year. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AB: First of all, I was looking for inspiration, but this collection is very convenient in everyday life. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AB: This design has already been produced. Each item is handmade in a single copy. But, I think, you can think about increasing production. How this will be done, I have not decided yet. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AB: I like to work with fabric, especially silk. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AB: I try not to be inspired by the work of other people. This allows me to remain genuine and unlike others. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AB: My target customers are women who love sophistication, beauty, charm. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AB: I did not compare different designs. But this, like a fingerprint, each person has his own. If initially you didn’t copy someone’s design, but created your own, grew it like pearl from a grain of sand, then your design will be unique. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AB: The Great Silk Road is not just a trade route, it is a unique historical phenomenon that introduced two different worlds - east and west. This is the emergence of new cities and countries, this is the spread of science and culture, this is the path to the unknown and new discoveries. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AB: This is the story of my inner state. An attempt to find a balance between the European way of life and oriental roots. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AB: The work of the project needed the help of a professional tailor FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AB: When creating the project, a large role was assigned to manual production. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AB: Before the creation of the collection, no studies were conducted. It was an inspiration. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AB: There were no particular problems when creating the collection, except for a lack of time. But this is a common thing in any job) FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AB: I decided to submit my design at a competition on the advice of friends. They convinced me that my work deserves an international award. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AB: While working on the project, I delved into the study of history, mastered some techniques for working with fabric.
