Interview with Unto at Sunday 3rd of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
UL: To express the brand's identity of experimental design.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
UL: The focus is to break out of the norm, from designing what goes on a name card to designing its function. Returning the essential function of a name card, which is connecting, and try to extend that.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
UL: It is our own branding identity, so the plan is to carry out its purpose for our studio.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
UL: From design research to completing the execution, about a month.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
UL: We are inspired by "The theory of Six Degrees of Separation" which navigates as the primary concept in design thinking, you may read the details in our design brief. But long story short, we believes a name card is at it's most communication deliverance when passed over from a first-degree acquaintance to a second, meaning the person who receives the card shares it again with other potential clients or friends. Such a scenario is explored in the design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
UL: It is for ourselves.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
UL: We liked the challenge, a desire for the unknown.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
UL: The interactive quality to the design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
UL: Name cards, product wrapping and so on, have been all time necessary assets for brands and individuals to communicate. Also we aim to return and focus of the functionality of such, so we named this Unto Communication Tool.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
UL: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Keyshot.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
UL: Our design suggests the card to be split into two and encourages the user to keep one and share one. The design aims to increase the connections that one name card can make, and one social networking scene could offer.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
UL: Yes, like we mentioned earlier, "The theory of Six Degrees of Separation" navigates as the primary concept in design thinking. Research as found that, in a world of 7 billion people, it seems that we are all connected by six or fewer acquaintances. And since internet networking has widely expanded our online acquaintances, the six people is lowered to four. Using the ancient way of advertising, word of mouth, this first-degree connection who received the name card is encouraged to extend the relationship to a second.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
UL: The challenge is trying to come up with ways to enhance the user experience of a name card, to be experimental on something so ubiquitous.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
UL: Why not?
