Interview with Peter Rattle for CUS (Vic) Pty Ltd at Tuesday 5th of May 2020 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? PR: To ensure the new Seating reflected the Art Deco heritage of this building. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? PR: Our aim was to add both function and style to the refurbishment of this Cinema with a look from the 1930's. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? PR: Hopefully we can build on this design to win future projects in the Heritage sector. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? PR: Several months which including various drawings and prototypes. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? PR: The original requirement was part of the tender process, however we changed the concept and ultimate design to fit the Buildings Décor. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? PR: We are happy to share our expertise with others. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? PR: To meet the requirements of the Heritage overlay on this Building FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? PR: Yes, we were influenced by the Architects involvement. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? PR: RMIT University and the people of Melbourne. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? PR: The opportunity to work on a Building that has survived for nearly 100 years of change and be part of bringing it back to life for the next generation. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? PR: It was the name of the project and Building. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? PR: The use of templates and prototypes to ensure all the components worked and fitted together. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? PR: All aspects brought their own level of uniqueness to this project. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? PR: Our skilled Cabinet Makers and Upholsterers, helped to bring this project to life. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? PR: Yes we researched various images of the Art Deco style including the Chicago Gothic to get a feel for the type of seating used during this particular point in time. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? PR: We thought that this particular project was worthy enough to be included in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design Sector of the Award. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? PR: From our point of view we were extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work on a Building that was originally designed by Husband and Wife team - Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin.
