Interview with Natalia Komarova at Saturday 2nd of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NK: The round shape of the capsule has a beneficial effect on the human psyche, soothes and relaxes him. It is no coincidence that in the fields of medicine and spa often sleeping chambers are also performed in this rounded oblong form. Developing the concept of the lamp we sought to recreate this aesthetic effect.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NK: The main emphasis is on cost and affordability for people, as well as the possibility of mass production. At the same time, I wanted to create an exclusive author's product.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NK: I am going to negotiate with different manufacturers of lighting fixtures to make the product.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NK: It took about a month and a half to create the concept and its further presentation.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NK: I wanted to create a unique product available to a large number of people. An important role was played by inspiration, thanks to which this idea appeared.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NK: I am in search and would like to produce this product with the participation of the manufacturer.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NK: It's versatility. I wanted to create a lamp that would suit different styles of most spaces and interest a wide audience.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NK: The shape of medical capsules has become a source of inspiration. The process of creating was not influenced by other designers.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NK: In my opinion, this is a universal product for a wide audience.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NK: When designing, I was inspired by the handmade work of artisans. So that in spite of mass production, each lamp adds coziness and exclusivity to a space.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NK: The name reflects the shape of the plafond, which is inspired by the shapes of medical capsules.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NK: The process began with sketching, with an attempt to highlight individual forms and elements. Further, when there is an understanding of what you want to get, the stage of work in 3D max begins, after which a finished image appears, which remains to be processed a little. The process began with sketching, with an attempt to highlight individual forms and elements. To complete the project documentation, Autocad, Photoshop and InDesign are used.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NK: Each lamp has small stencil-plates placed inside the plafond. When turned on, they form an unusual color pattern that adds uniqueness to a room.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NK: I consulted with manufacturers of lighting fixtures to assess the cost and the possibility of manufacturing such products.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NK: I wanted to create a design at the intersection of modern technologies of mass production and craftsmanship of the past, due to the effect of handmade.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NK: Research and the search for universal forms and methods of efficient production helped to reduce production costs.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NK: For me it was a pretty serious challenge. Usually I create exclusive author's works, and in this case I tried to create a universal design that would suit a large number of people.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NK: This is my second year in this competition and I think that this is one of the most prestigious competitions. In addition, I would like to receive a feedback on my work from one of the most respected people in the world of design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NK: I gained important experience and knowledge in the field of creating universal products of mass production.
