Interview with Ting-Hsiang Chen at Monday 22nd of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? TC: This kind of art chair just like a substitute for melody. I mean that the “music” can be real touch and see. So the users could enjoy when they use it. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? TC: I want to make abstract into concrete, so I made melody into my art work. Especially, it can make you feel and touch the music. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? TC: Keep going and making better design FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? TC: The design process took about 8 months from sketch to paintng the 3D simulation. And then, the art work was finished after structure strength tests for 8 weeks. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? TC: The inspiration of the chair comes from music. The soft music I’m used to listening. I just wanna tell people how I feel in that moment. So I made it out. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? TC: Actually, the product haven’t been mass production , because I haven’t found a company willing to produce. So I produce by myself. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? TC: Music. The inspiration is from music. Especially, love songs. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? TC: My friends who are also interior designers give me some good advice. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? TC: The people who love my design. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? TC: Everyone has their own thoughts and feelings. Every designs are different and special. TC: Because the chair consists of 7 curves, so I named the chair Symphony Number 7 FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? TC: I used many design tools but the most interesting part was printed 1:1 model from 3D printing machine. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? TC: I think it is the appearance of the chair. It’s not only a chair but also a piece of music. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? TC: My college mates, my professor and I collaborated on this project. My professor is a technical engineer of furniture. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? TC: I use tube bender CNC first and then weld them. The seat cushion is sewed by hand. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? TC: The chair is ergonomically designed. Ergonomics is the process of designing products so that they fit the people who use them. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? TC: The components of both sides were hard to weld precisely FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? TC: I would like to broaden my horizons and make friends with designers from various countries. This helps me a lot. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? TC: Believe in myself. When I face the difficulty, think twice and sort out the problems.
