Interview with Maria Dlugoborskaya at Thursday 18th of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? MD: I am interested in inventing transformable objects that carry not one, but several functions at the same time. It allows to have space for creativity, you can think of something not ordinary. I came across a picture with a puzzle in which the square was divided into 4 equal asymmetric parts, I worked through a few ideas and this one turned out to be the most interesting. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? MD: For a long time I thought over the division into parts, the form of the parts themselves, I cared about the questions of ergonomics as well. I wanted the project to be airy, modern, organically fit into any space. I also wanted it to be quite simple in production. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? MD: I would like to put it into mass production. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? MD: It took me long enough, the object appeared to be not so easy for me. There were a lot of preliminary options in my design, until it took exactly this form. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? MD: No, this design has not been put into effect yet. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? MD: I would like to sell or lease the right to produce. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? MD: As I have already mentioned, it is interesting for me to invent transformable objects, apparently, my first mathematics education shows itself FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? MD: Joe Colombo's ideas about a transformable space are close to me. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? MD: I think that the main consumers of this product can be people who often receive guests, who like to spend time in the company. It will also be useful for small spaces. Well, most likely it will be appreciated by lovers of unusual design items. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? MD: I think that originality and concern for convenience make this design more attractive. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? MD: The name came out of the idea that this item, actually consisting of 4 identical parts, forms a whole. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? MD: When designing, I used the AutoCAD program, this very program allowed me to handle all the difficulties in my work. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? MD: I think it is the originality of the idea. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? MD: I used fairly traditional production technology. The transformation is also simple and done manually. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? MD: It was rather difficult to achieve an organic way of dividing the chair into sections and at the same time to preserve its stability and convenience. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? MD: I think that this is an interesting idea, but in Russia it is difficult to manufacture such kind of things. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? MD: I come up with ideas quite easily, but nevertheless it takes me time to bring them to a commercial result. I spent a lot of time thinking how to improve my design both studying the works of leading designers and analyzing my own work.
