Interview with Tse-Fang Lai at Friday 17th of May 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? TL: As a farmer's child. I know how hard the agriculture industry is. So make a simple design which can help farmer work easier is my core idea. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? TL: To deal with the problem of labor force shortage. Make planting efficiency and easier. Helping farmer increasing yields . FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? TL: I plant to study aboard and keeping improve my ability of design. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? TL: Half a year including testing. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? TL: Because of inspiration which inspired by my father's green house where planting cucumber. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? TL: My design already used by my father's agribusiness now. And this agribusiness and I common own the rights now. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? TL: After long observed the cucumber planting. I found what if there has a simple device to make the whole process easier is the primary goal. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? TL: For this, nope. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? TL: Farmer, especially who those planting climbing plant. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? TL: It makes agriculture easier. it is an agricultural tool that includes planting, care and recycle function. Achieve the need to save labor force, and is not expensive, let every farmer could use. This is rare in traditional agricultural planting products. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? TL: Shape in the middle of the product. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? TL: At the beginning of the design, we used a 3D printer to do the test. After the test, we used the mold to make the product for the farmer to use. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? TL: Roller Planter is specially for climbing plant. This device use simple mechanist elements and made by lower price material. The core objective is let every farmers affordable this device. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? TL: I work with the farm. They provide which problem need solving and I design tool to they FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? TL: It is made by fiber reinforced plastics so it is light and supporting fast installation, fast height adjusting and easily recycling. This device can decreasing labor force wasted and give plants independence growth space which easily for management and helping increasing the yield. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? TL: The product's material. the producers must maintain the working functionality in the long-term exposure to sunlight. The case also does much testing in martials. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? TL: Testing Time is a big challenge. Because climbing plants needs 2-3 growth period,so need spend many time to recording the product use. The motivation for me to create Roller Planter is to saving time and labor force. After many times testing. ln this case I fixed every detail and using recycled material. And expect every user could have a wonderful using experience which its time saving and yield increasing. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? TL: I wantto leteveryoneknowthat Farming can bemade easier by good tools. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? TL: Be more patient, look at every detail and make the design to people need. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? TL: No anymore, thanks
